Overview of Belize's Top Cruise Ship Shore Excursions

Belize is a popular tender port on western Caribbean cruises, offering visitors a range of adventure activities without requiring a visit to Belize City itself. The video presents four major shore excursion options: snorkeling at Rendezvous Caye or Caye Caulker (including Shark Alley), exploring Mayan ruins at Xunantunich, cave tubing combined with zip-lining, and two-tank diving trips. Most excursions pick passengers up directly from the ship by boat, bypassing the city entirely and returning you safely before departure.

This guide suits cruise passengers who want outdoor adventure—whether snorkeling, cultural exploration, or adrenaline activities—but prioritize safety and convenience. The video's creators, who have visited over 45 countries and 70 cruise ports, emphasize booking through your cruise line rather than independent operators, particularly given current travel advisories for the region.

Key Moments

Highlights of Belize Shore Excursions

  • Xunantunich's El Castillo: the second-largest building in Belize, built as a shrine and stargazing platform with functional stone stairs and impressive acoustics that allowed leaders' voices to carry to crowds below
  • Rendezvous Caye snorkeling: a one-hour boat ride south from the ship to a small island with guided reef tours, abundant fish and coral, and rays swimming into the sandbar where you can view them up close
  • Caye Caulker Shark Alley: a northern snorkeling destination where you can safely interact with nurse sharks and Caribbean stingray, followed by lunch and beach time on a sandbar
  • Cave tubing and zip-lining combinations: adventure activities that include walking to underground rivers and can be paired with Mayan ruin visits
  • Two-tank diving excursions: professional diving trips to reef areas, including Shark Alley, with boat pickup directly from your ship
  • The Caribbean boat ride itself: gorgeous blue water and moderately priced drinks aboard the tender vessels

What to Know Before Booking a Belize Excursion

  • Belize is a tender port, meaning small boats transport you from the ship—most excursions pick you up directly at your vessel and return you there, avoiding Belize City
  • Book through your cruise line's shore excursion program; the company will hold the ship if their official excursion runs late due to traffic, weather, or mechanical issues—independent bookings offer no such guarantee
  • Travel advisories are in effect: check travel.state.gov before your cruise; as of the video's recording, Belize City carries a Level 3 warning, while the country has a Level 2 advisory
  • Snorkeling excursions to the cays typically last several hours and include guide services and equipment; some tours start slightly behind schedule due to boat maintenance coordination
  • Cave tubing requires considerable walking to reach the river, and depending on the tour, you may or may not carry your own tube during the hike
  • Xunantunich is located approximately 70 miles west of Belize City and benefits from a river location that supported ancient trade; allow extra time in your ship excursion booking to account for road travel

Frequently Asked Questions About Belize Cruise Excursions

Why should I book a cruise line excursion instead of an independent one?

The video creators share a concerning past experience in which they booked an independent Belize excursion, no one showed up, and dealing with local operators proved very uncomfortable. Your cruise line guarantees the ship will not leave without you and will delay departure if their excursion runs late. For Belize specifically, this safety net is highly valuable given current travel advisories.

How long is the boat ride to the snorkeling cays?

The journey to both Rendezvous Caye and Caye Caulker is approximately one hour by boat from your cruise ship. The ride itself is described as scenic, with beautiful Caribbean waters, and includes access to onboard bars with moderately priced drinks.

What can I see and do at Rendezvous Caye?

Rendezvous Caye offers guided snorkeling around the island with plentiful fish and coral reefs. You'll encounter stingrays swimming into the shallow sandbar, allowing close-up viewing. The excursion includes beach time where you can relax under a palm tree with a drink and simply enjoy the tropical setting.

Is it safe to interact with sharks at Shark Alley?

Yes. The sharks found at Shark Alley are nurse sharks and Caribbean stingrays, which are non-aggressive species commonly encountered on snorkeling tours. The video mentions that family members had a great experience interacting with these animals in a controlled snorkeling setting.

What is El Castillo and why is it significant?

El Castillo is the second-largest building in Belize, located within the ancient Mayan city of Xunantunich. Originally built as a shrine, dwelling, and meeting place for elite rulers, it features four sets of stairs you can still climb and remarkable acoustics that allowed leaders to address crowds gathered below. The site was occupied by up to 20,000 people during its peak and survived longer than other Mayan civilizations in the region, possibly due to its strategic riverside location that facilitated trade.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful for anyone cruising to Belize because it cuts through the noise and gives you the real story: which excursions are worth your time, why booking through your cruise line matters, and how to avoid the safety concerns that come with independent operators in Belize City. The creators' honesty about a past uncomfortable experience lends credibility, and their emphasis on current travel advisories shows they're current and responsible guides.

What stands out most is the practical detail that cruise line excursions will hold the ship for you—that single fact changes the entire risk calculation for cruise passengers. The snorkeling recommendations are specific and encouraging without being oversold, and the video respects your time by explaining exactly what each activity entails. If you're deciding whether Belize is for you on your Caribbean cruise, this video gives you everything you need to book confidently.

Description

Belize is a very popular port of call on western Caribbean cruises. It offers great diving and snorkeling, Mayan ruins, cave tubing and zip lines. Belize is a tender port so many shore excursions can be done directly from the ship without going into Belize City.

This video talks about the Mayan City of Xunantunich, a very large Mayan city and El Castillo, the large building in Xunantunich.

Cave tubing and zip lining are very popular in Belize and these can be combined into shore excursions that also visit Mayan Ruins.

Our favorite excursions are to snorkel in the beautiful blue Caribbean waters at Rendezvous Caye or Caye Caulker which has Shark Alley. Both about and hour boat ride directly from your cruise ship.

As of recording of this video there are travel advisories for both the country of Belize and the Belize City. Belize city has a Level 3 warning to avoid travel. We talk about how to check those advisories.

Travel Advisories can be checked at travel.state.gov

We recommend using the Cruise Line shore excursions in Belize.

bise offers Many Adventures it is most known for diving snorkeling Mayan ruins cave tubing and ziplining in this video we're going to provide an overview of the major excursions at the end of this video we will include the two shore excursions our family selected which picked us up by boat at the cruise ship

and sold us directly to site avoiding Biz City [Music] hi y'all I'm Jeff and I'm Becky and together we're cruising good time so the first of the major sites to see and believe is Mayan ruins so shenan please forgive me if I mispronounce this is a major Mayan archaeological site it's the

tallest of the sites and B and is believed to have held as many as 20,000 people during the day its major part of this is El Castillo which of course stands for the castle and and this is the second largest building in all of bise and it was used as a shrine dwelling meeting place for the elite

rulers uh it allowed for stargazing speaking and sacrificial ceremonies it has magnificent Acoustics it was built so that the leader could talk and the multitudes could hear down below it has four sets of stairs go to the top which you can still use and be able to test the Acoustics for yourself it is located

on a river which allows the trading of goods and movement of people which may have been one of the reasons why it survived over 100 years more than the other Mayan civilizations in the area it's located about 70 Mi west of bise City we do recommend that you take a short Excursion through the cruise line

just in case there's traffic problems getting there getting back whatever the cruise line will hold the ship for their own shore excursions if you're on dependent one you may not make it back in time just for traffic or weather or whatnot so do take the your own Shore Excursion trip with that I love caves

and I love spelunking in bise there are many different tours which will allow for cave tubing which we have not done but I have heard very good things about I've also heard that you are going to walk a considerable distance to the river and depending on the Excursion you may or may not be carrying your own tube

during the walk and um if you've been watching you know I absolutely love ziplining and there are many shore excursions that combine cave tubing with ziplining I want to take just a quick second to thank our subscribers for watching the video if you just found us with this video please give us a like

And subscribe and consider and join our community we'd love to have you and uh show you all our travel Adventures before traveling to bise be sure to check the website travel.state.gov for travel advisories there is a travel advisory out for it right now while we're filming us there's a level two for

the country and a level three for B City itself which can be pretty rough Jeff and I have traveled to over 45 countries and one of the most um concerning experience we have is that we were on a cruise ship we went to bise it was a number of years ago we got off the ship we booked an independent Shore Excursion

nobody showed up we were dealing with the locals to try to book another Excursion and everything was just very uncomfortable there at that City therefore we highly recommend just book something from your cruise ship a lot of times we have no problem at all using independent uh shore excursions this B

definitely use the ship shore excursions I think you'll be safer there as a rule of thumb and you'll definitely the ship is not going to leave without you now we do short excursions either straight from the ship whether they're uh on a boat that goes out to a reef to go snorkel or

uh you stay with the bus going Inland like that B has great snorkeling and if you go straight off the boat to one of the keys out there I think you'll be safe on the last cruise that we're on that stopped at bise you know to Tinder in we were with a very large family group so we did Splinter into separate

groups so Jeff and I went to an amazing Shore Excursion yeah we went to Rond Vu K the boat picked us up right at the ship just went straight South I don't know how many miles but boat ride down there went to a little K great snorkeling we we had to guide there they gave us the snorkel

equipment the guide was very good took us around a little loop around the island right there lot of fish lot of coral to see and then just kind of hung out on the beach right there it really a lot of fun we had some rays that would swim right up into the uh the sandb bar right there and you could see the Rays

up really closely and get in the water with them and it's also just a good place to sit underneath the palm tree and have a nice cold beer and just enjoy life at that moment so we I do recommend rondu K we had a wonderful time on the Rondevu K tour we met in the ship in the dining room so the group of us gathered

and then we went on the shore Excursion the one downside was the tour started I don't know about 45 minutes late yeah and when we got on the shore Excursion boat we asked the captain and what went down and it turns out that they had a maintenance problem on one of the boats that does sh Excursion so they're

running extra Duty and just everything was running late the journey to rendevu K you know it's that beautiful Caribbean Ocean I enjoyed the boat ride going over there and just looking out at it that gorgeous blue water they had bars that offered moderately priced drinks yeah you know for being a captive audience on

a sandbar it wasn't as bad as after airport security by stretch of the imagination it was actually pretty reasonably priced it was a beautiful day and just gorgeous Caribbean Waters it was a very nice Shore Excursion and getaway so the other part of our group went to sharks rays and beerer reef where you could do

snorkeling and interact with some sharks and Rays yeah they have a lot of nurse sharks and and Caribbean type string rays there and my sister and her husband and her family had a great time there they had spoke very highly about it at dinner that night so it sounded like a lot of fun

again they picked them up right at our cruise ship and then they went North where was we went South R UK they went North up there to the the shark alley area did their snorkeling went into a little Sandbar right there had some lunch and couple beers and then came on back into the ship that afternoon so

very similar uh to what we did in terms of just getting off the ship onto another boat going straight to the uh Island and then coming back in we avoided B City all together that way so when reviewing the shore excursions between several Cruise Lines we see that most of the cruises will offer some

variation of one of the two activities that our family did some will actually offer some two- tank Dives bise has some great diving out there it's kind of North Area up there by the shark alley in fact I think you can dive in shark alley as well uh some Cruise Lines will offer a two-tank dive out there again

they just pick you up the ship take you right up there to the the reef and then and go do some diving bise has wonderful diving our daughter has gone on diving trip where they flew into bise City took another plane to a Barrier Island and just had fabulous experience we hope you've enjoyed this video if you like

the video please give us a like And subscribe and turn on those notifications it really helps us out until next time have a cruising good time [Music] o [Music]
