What to Expect from This Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour

This 10-minute aerial tour departs from Niagara Helicopters' helipad and circles Niagara Falls from above, giving you a bird's-eye perspective of one of the world's most iconic natural wonders. The flight captures both the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls, along with the surrounding gorge, whirlpool, and the twin cities on either side of the border. You'll see hydroelectric facilities, reservoirs, and landmarks like the Rainbow Bridge, Goat Island, and the Skylon Tower—views that ground-level visitors simply cannot access.

This experience suits adventure seekers who want photography from unique angles, visitors who've already seen the Falls from below and want a fresh perspective, and anyone interested in the geological and industrial history of the region. The video shows a couple booking tickets for $300 total, making it an accessible splurge for a special outing. If you're planning a Niagara visit and want to maximize the "wow factor," a helicopter tour deserves serious consideration—spots fill quickly during peak season.

Key Moments

Highlights of the Flight Route and Sights

  • The Niagara Whirlpool and Rapids—a turbulent section of the river below the Falls where the water churns dramatically
  • The Majestic Canadian Horseshoe Falls at close range—the crown jewel, viewed from directly above and often revealing multiple rainbows in the mist
  • The Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric complex and its massive reservoirs on the Canadian side, plus the Robert Moses complex visible across the border in New York
  • Rainbow Bridge and the contrast between the Canadian and American waterfronts, with city landmarks like the Fallsview Casino Resort and Skylon Tower
  • Niagara Gorges and surrounding parklands, including the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture and Butterfly Conservatory
  • The geology lesson woven throughout—learning that the Falls have eroded upstream over 12,000 years and now move only 3 centimeters per year due to hydroelectric diversion

Common Questions About Niagara Falls Helicopter Tours

How far up do you fly during the tour?

The video doesn't specify exact altitude, but the footage shows a clear, elevated vantage point high enough to see the entire Falls, surrounding gorge, and city landscape in a single view. You're well above ground-level viewing areas but not so high that details like the Rainbow Bridge and generating stations become tiny specks.

Can you see both the Canadian and American sides?

Yes. The video explicitly shows both Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York during the flight, giving you a complete border-to-border perspective that ground tours cannot match.

Is this tour safe for nervous fliers?

The video emphasizes safety briefings and seatbelt requirements. The flight is short (10 minutes), which may help anxious passengers. However, the tour is marketed as "the ride of your life," so it's designed for those comfortable with aviation. If you have serious flight anxiety, ask Niagara Helicopters about their comfort level recommendations.

What should I wear for a helicopter tour?

The video doesn't explicitly address clothing, but dress for the season and be aware that late September (when this tour was filmed) and winter flights involve colder temperatures at altitude and potential mist. Layers are always a safe choice.

Do I need to book in advance?

The video doesn't detail booking procedures, but given the short flight duration and high demand for helicopter tours at Niagara Falls, booking ahead is strongly advised to secure your preferred time slot.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it doesn't just show spectacular aerial footage—it walks you through the entire booking and boarding process, names the actual cost ($300 for two), and includes an on-board safety briefing and flight path overview. You get a realistic sense of what to expect before, during, and after the flight, which removes guesswork from your decision.

What I appreciated most was the narrator's casual, honest narration. They're visibly excited without overselling, and they weave in fascinating historical and geological context—explaining how the Falls have migrated over 12,000 years and how modern hydroelectric plants have slowed erosion. The aerial views themselves are stunning, and the 10-minute duration feels right: long enough to appreciate the full route without overstaying your budget or stomach. If you're serious about experiencing Niagara Falls from every angle, this helicopter tour review will convince you it's worth booking.

Description

Ontario has the world famous Niagara Falls. To appreciate the beauty of Niagara Falls, one must view it from many different vantage points. In this video, we take you on a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls city, so you can view the Falls from high up. The view was just stunning!

The helicopter tour, which took place on Sept 10, 2022, started from the helipad of Niagara Helicopters. We passed over the Niagara Golf Course. We then flew over the Niagara Whirlpool, then the Niagara Rapids and Rainbow Bridge. We made our way over the American Falls then over the crown of Niagara Falls, the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. We had an awesome view of the city of Niagara Falls, on the Canadian side and the city of Niagara Falls on the United States side. Hydroelectricity generating facilities were clearly visible as well as the several reservoirs which we never knew existed.

Hi everyone! Welcome to my channel. Today, I'm going to take you on a tour of helicopter ride to see the Falls.

So, we got our tickets. $300 for 2. And we're going to line up waiting for our flight.

This is the flight. It's a round trip. (Of course!) It's supposed to be about 10 minutes. Let's see the certificate. We supposed  to get a certificate as well Yeah the certificate... has joined the

select Society of High Flyers, Daredevils, Romantics and Adventurers. Wow okay. Certificate of Daredevils! Are you excited? Yeah...

a little bit further

Now, we're ready to depart. Yayy!!! Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the ride of your life! As we begin our spectacular journey, we ask that you please keep seatbelt fastened for the entire flight If you're sitting in the front seat, please make sure your feet, arms and bags do not touch the helicopter controls.

Looking downstream as we climb over the Whirlpool Golf Course, you can see the prestigious Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture, home of the Butterfly Conservatory. A stroll through these lush garden and elaborate parklands reveals why it's a favorite year-round destination for thousands of tourists every year.

This section of the Niagara River below the Falls is called the Niagara Gorges. It's a favourite destination for hikers, nature lovers, and recreational fishermen. Most scientists believe that 12,000 years ago, the Falls were located near Queenston Heights, 11 km downstream  from their current location

It actually eroded their way along the stretch of the Niagara River at a rate of about 1m per year. In the early 1950's when the hydro plants began diverting water, the erosion rate slowed to a mere 3cm per year. When the first European man reported seeing the Falls, in 1678, the Falls would have been closer to their current location.

But the Canadian Horseshoe Falls would have formed only a shallow U-shape.

And here we are at the Majestic Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Once you experienced the magnificence of the Falls, you can understand why it attracted millions of people for centuries. While most visitors are satisfied to gaze at them from the shore, some have attempted to challenge their might in daring feats.

Although recent daredevil attempts have been fairly successful, we still prefer our more distant, decidedly drier vantage point. The view is simply better up here. From this angle on a sunny day, you are likely to spot several spectacular rainbows in the mists.

The Falls are awe inspiring in every seasons, but winter boasts unique wonders. Snow and ice built up at the base of the Falls, forming a 10 stories deep ice-bridge between Canada and the United States. Decades ago, it was common winter recreation for people to stroll and socialize on this ice bridge,

until the day the ice broke, sending 3 people down the river and many others scrambling for their lives. A larger than usual ice bridge wreaked havoc again in 1938, when it actually destroyed the upper steel arch bridge. But this combination of mist and cold can be beautiful as well.

Throughout the winter, mist settles and freezes on the surrounding parks, transforming them into a glistening frozen fantasy land.

We travelled full circle, and you can once again see the Whirlpool and the Niagara Heliport. As we prepare for our final descent, you now have a clear view of two massive concrete structures, extending down the sides of the Gorges to the river edge. These are the hydro generating plants I spoke of earlier. The Sir Adam Beck Complex here in Canada and the Robert Moses complex in the United States.

The two large reservoirs on either side of the river hold the water that is brought from the gate upstream, until it is needed. For those of you interested in the fascinating process of turning water into electricity, tours are offered at the Sir Adam Beck generating complex throughout the day.

We hope you enjoyed your flight. For your safety, as we begin our descent to the Niagara Heliport, we asked that you please keep your seatbelt fastened. As you exit the helicopter, please return your headset to where you found it. As you leave, please walk directly to the exit gate.

Thank you for flying with Niagara Helicopters.  Have a wonderful stay in Niagara.    We look forward to seeing you again soon. Have a great day and a safe journey home. And remember to check out your takeoff photograph which is now ready for you in our Photo Studio.
