Experience Sedona's Red Rocks from Above: A Helicopter Tour Overview

This video follows full-time RV travelers Tom and Cheri as they experience their first helicopter tour over Sedona, Arizona, with Guidance Air. The tour takes off from Sedona and offers aerial views of the region's iconic red sandstone formations, geological layers, and famous landmarks like Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Airport Mesa. What makes this experience unique is the perspective—as the pilot Jake explains, certain rock formations are simply unreachable from the ground, and the real magic happens around sunset when the rocks glow in brilliant orange and red hues.

This tour is ideal for travelers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime aerial adventure, whether you're visiting Sedona for the first time or celebrating a special occasion. Frequently Asked Questions About Sedona Helicopter Tours

Is it safe to fly in a helicopter tour, especially if I'm nervous?

Yes. In the video, one traveler admits to being nervous but is reassured that Guidance Air has had zero fatalities. The actual flight experience is described as smooth, not turbulent, making it comfortable even for first-time flyers. The pre-flight safety briefing covers all procedures and helps ease anxiety.

When should I book the tour for the best experience?

Sunset is the best time. The pilot explains that there's approximately a 15-minute window around sunset when the low sun angle creates brilliant orange and red colors that make the rocks appear to "explode with color." This is the optimal time to see Sedona's full beauty from the air.

How long does a typical Sedona helicopter tour last?

While the video does not specify an exact tour duration, it shows the full experience from pre-flight briefing through takeoff, aerial sightseeing, and landing. You should plan for at least 2–3 hours total to account for arrival, safety checks, the flight itself, and post-flight time.

What geological features will I see on the tour?

You'll see Sedona's famous red sandstone formations (the Schnebly Hill formation), nine distinct layers of stone spanning hundreds of millions of years, and the four main spiritual vortex sites: Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon. Landmarks like rock formations resembling Snoopy and Lucy from the comic strip are also visible.

Is Sedona a good destination for budget travelers?

Sedona itself can be pricey, but the area offers affordable camping options through BLM (Bureau of Land Management) free boondocking sites and several RV parks with attractive monthly rates just outside town. The helicopter tour is a splurge but often booked as a special celebration, making it worthwhile for once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Justin’s Take

This video is invaluable because it shows real first-time helicopter flyers experiencing the tour from arrival through celebration, so you see the full emotional arc—nervous anticipation becoming awe and wonder. The pilot's expert commentary on geology and safety reassurance, combined with honest reactions to the views, gives potential visitors a genuine sense of what to expect.

What struck me most was how both travelers were genuinely moved to tears by the experience, calling it something they couldn't put into words and recommending it as a must-do for anyone visiting Sedona. If you're on the fence about whether a helicopter tour is worth the investment, this video makes a compelling case. I'd absolutely recommend booking with Guidance Air.
