Overview of This Kilauea Helicopter and Big Island Day Tour

This helicopter tour review follows a full-day excursion that departs from Oahu, flying participants to the Big Island of Hawaii for an aerial and ground-based exploration of Kilauea Volcano and surrounding natural attractions. The experience begins with a scenic flight from Hilo airport to a helipad, where visitors board a three-seat helicopter with priority front-row seating. From there, the tour combines helicopter views of the volcano's crater and lava fields with guided ground stops at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Rainbow Falls, a black sand beach, and cultural sites—making it an all-inclusive package that arranges transportation, the flight itself, park admission, and a dedicated tour guide.

This tour suits adventure travelers willing to invest significantly in a single highlight experience, couples seeking a memorable milestone activity, and anyone fascinated by volcanic geology and dramatic landscapes. The January timing shown in the video reveals sparse crowds at the national park, though visitors should expect variable volcanic activity (the video crew arrived a week after an eruption and a week before the next one). It's ideal for those with a full day to spare and a budget that can accommodate what the video describes as "easily the most expensive part" of a Hawaii trip.

Key Moments

Highlights of the Kilauea and Big Island Experience

  • Helicopter flight over Kilauea's massive crater, where the pilot hovers on both sides of the aircraft so all passengers can see the volcanic crater and solidified lava fields
  • Close-up views of lava tubes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park—large underground passages 6–8 feet in diameter where ancient lava once flowed
  • Rainbow Falls, an 78-foot waterfall whose mist creates visible rainbows, with a stop in historic Old Town Hilo for lunch and shave ice
  • Black sand beach exploration, where crushed pumice and lava rock create the distinctive dark shoreline, with opportunities to spot humpback whales from coastal rock outcroppings
  • Volcano House lodge overlook, where visitors photograph the crater from the back porch of this historic property with minimal crowds
  • Big Island Candy Factory viewing area, where visitors observe chocolate-making and can purchase treats

What to Know Before Booking This Big Island Volcano Tour

  • The package is all-inclusive: shuttles to and from the airport, the helicopter flight, park admissions, and a tour guide are covered; only meals require separate purchase
  • Helicopter seating is limited, and the video travelers were fortunate to secure front-row seats—front positions offer superior views and should be requested when booking
  • The flight itself was reported as very smooth with no motion sickness despite the wife's typical sensitivity, but individual experiences vary
  • Volcanic activity is unpredictable; the video crew saw smoke and crater features but not active eruption, so set expectations around geological observation rather than guaranteed lava displays
  • January visits coincide with humpback whale migration season, and visitors may spot whales from the helicopter or from coastal areas, though sightings are not guaranteed
  • Plan for a full day of ground touring after the helicopter flight; the itinerary includes multiple stops with walking and standing, so wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection
  • Weather can create haze from volcanic smoke, which may affect photo clarity even on otherwise nice days

Frequently Asked Questions About Kilauea Helicopter Tours

How long does the entire tour last?

The video does not specify the total duration, but the itinerary includes a helicopter flight, multiple ground stops at Volcano National Park, Rainbow Falls, a black sand beach, and two commercial sites, indicating a full-day commitment from morning airport pickup to evening return.

What if the volcano isn't actively erupting?

You will still see the massive crater, solidified lava fields, smoke plumes, and geological features that reveal the volcano's power and structure. The video demonstrates that even without active lava flows, the experience remains worthwhile for understanding volcanic landscapes and geology.

Is the helicopter ride suitable for people with motion sickness?

The video notes the flight was very smooth, and the passenger who typically experiences motion sickness had no issues. However, individual tolerance varies, and factors like weather and seat position can affect comfort.

Can you really see humpback whales on this tour?

Humpback whales migrate near Hawaii's coast during winter months, and the tour includes both helicopter time over the ocean and ground stops at coastal rocks where whales may be spotted. The video crew did see whales at the black sand beach, though sightings depend on migration timing and luck.

What's included in the all-inclusive package price?

The package covers airport shuttles (from Hilo), the helicopter flight, the helicopter tour guide, admissions to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and ground transportation throughout the day. Meals and any shopping or optional activities are separate expenses.

Justin’s Take

This video delivers exactly what a prospective traveler needs: honest detail about cost, actual volcanic conditions (including the reality of not seeing eruption), seating and comfort, and a realistic day-by-day breakdown of what the all-inclusive itinerary covers. The reviewer doesn't oversell the experience or hide that volcanic activity is unpredictable, which makes the enthusiasm for the tour itself feel earned and trustworthy.

What stands out most is how thoroughly the video documents both the aerial and ground portions—too many helicopter tour reviews focus only on the flight and gloss over the day's other stops, but here you see Rainbow Falls' 78-foot drop, the actual lava tubes you walk through, and even the candy factory, giving a real sense of pacing and variety. This is genuinely one of the better best helicopter tour reviews I've seen, and I'd confidently recommend it to anyone considering booking.

Welcome to our review of Hawaii Tours. After landing at the Hilo airport, we easily found our shuttle to the helport where we got a safety briefing and got ready for our flight. The helicopter itself had three seats in the back and two passenger seats in the front. We were lucky enough to have the front

seats. Although this was easily the most expensive part of our trip to Hawaii, it was the most enjoyable. Hawaii tour is arranged for the shuttles back and forth to the airport, for the flight itself, for the helicopter ride, for the tour guide for the day, admissions to the park. It was an

all-inclusive package. We only had to purchase our meals. After takeoff, we quickly rose to a very high altitude because the national park has restricted airspace and we had to fly over it. It didn't take too long before we could start to see the plumes of smoke coming out of the Kilawaya volcano and off in

the distance. As we hovered over the massive crater, you could see where all the lava had solidified. The volcano was erupting the week before and we here the week after we were there. So, all we got to see is the smoke and some of the activity that we knew was underneath. The pilot took the time to

give everyone an opportunity to see the volcano. He hovered around on one side and then turned and hovered so the other side of the aircraft could see the same view. Although the volcano wasn't erupting, we know it was still active and it was still wonderful experience to be there. Here you can see some craters

in the lava and you can see the lava field itself a little bit closer up. With the surreal experience of viewing a volcano from a helicopter quickly coming to an end, we decided as a group that we would hover out over the ocean and see if we couldn't spot any humpback whales in their migration. What

I can say about the ride is it was very smooth. My wife usually gets motion sickness, but for this it wasn't a problem because it was pretty smooth. We spent some time off the coast over the ocean looking for humpback whales, but unfortunately we were not able to spot any. As our flight was coming to an end,

we started to approach the airport as any airplane would. As you would see as we get closer to the landing, we shared basically the same runway and the helipad was right next to the airport. The landing was silky smooth. As we touched down, you could see the airplanes at the airport just in front

of us. We sat safely in the helicopter, waiting for the blades to come to a complete stop before they would get out a stool to help us out individually. Our tour guide picked us up directly from the helipad and took us to Hawaii's Volcano National Park with the first stop being Volcano

House. From the back porch of the historic lodge looking over Kilawea, we were able to take many videos and get some pretty good looks at the volcano from the ground. We were visiting in January and as you can see, the crowds were very sparse. The lodge looked like it was a very nice

place to stay. It was certainly scenic and we were able to get very good views of the crater. After a snack, we jumped back in the shuttle and drove around to an overlook that was much closer to the actual volcano itself. The weather was very nice, except the videos and the pictures, you can see how

hazy it was because of the smoke. The prevailing winds were pushing the smoke right across into our view instead of away from us. After taking enough time to take good photos and a couple videos, we jumped back in the van to head over to the lava tubes. Before arriving at the lava

tubes, we were able to see a valley that was flooded with lava and now is hardened. The lava tubes are actually quite large where the wa lava runs underneath the ground and these large tubes are rivers. You can walk through them probably 6 8 ft round. It really is amazing the power of

nature. After leaving Volcano National Park, we headed over to Oldtown Hilo for lunch. We also enjoyed some shave ice pineapple flavor. Next, we stopped at Rainbow Falls, where a waterfall drops 78 ft into a basin. The water rushes so briskly at times the mist makes very nice rainbows. Wrapping our time up at the

Rainbow Falls, we move towards the black sand beach. It is my understanding that black sand is crushed pummus or the black rocks from the lava that turn into sand. As we walked along the beach, we made our way to a outcropping of rocks where we might be able to see some humpback whales right out

there. You maybe see its tail. See it? Barely. There. I saw the Just saw it blow blow again. Blow again. That's it. Where it's blowing. You're going to see the tail. Although you really can't see it in the pictures and video, we did see some humpback whales. Departing from the black sand

beach, we made our way to Muka Olo Gardens. We got to see one of the Tory gates. Next, we headed over to the Big Island Candy Factory. They had a viewing area where you could see how the chocolate was made. We also purchased a whole bunch. Our trip to the big island of Hawaii was

a wonderful experience. The highlight of the time we spent of our week in Hawaii. Thanks for joining us. Please like and subscribe. [Music]
