Maui from Above: What This Helicopter Tour Reveals

This video walks you through what Maverick Helicopters offers on their Maui flight routes, guided by four experienced pilots who collectively bring over 3,000 hours of aviation experience to the skies. Rather than just showcasing scenic views, the pilots explain exactly what you'll see—from the Wall of Tears in the West Maui Mountains to the Hana Rainforest Preserve, the largest rainforest preserve in the United States—and why a helicopter is often the only practical way to reach these landmarks. The tour covers eight different types of Earth terrain, blending tropical, oceanic, and volcanic landscapes in single flights that sometimes extend to neighboring Molokai.

This experience suits travelers who want more than a resort stay: hikers curious about remote valleys, photographers drawn to waterfalls and sea cliffs, and first-time flyers wondering whether a helicopter tour is worth it. The video directly addresses nervous flyers, describing the ride as a "magic carpet"—smooth, controlled, and designed specifically for tourism. If you've booked a Maui vacation but feel unsure about spending time and money on an aerial tour, the pilots' candid recommendations help you understand the unique vantage points and landscapes you simply can't access from the ground.

What You Need to Know Before Booking

  • Aircraft: Maverick flies Airbus ECO-Star helicopters exclusively, built specifically for tourism and rated as the safest and most comfortable in the industry. The company holds the FAA's Diamond Award of Excellence for safety and maintenance.
  • First-time flyer tips: The ride is smoother than many expect; keep your eyes moving rather than fixing on one landmark to avoid motion sickness, and wear dark clothing to reduce reflections in photos.
  • Timing: Book your flight early in your vacation so the aerial layout helps you plan other activities and sightseeing on the island.
  • Photo advice: Trained pilots offer aviation tips to help you capture moments on a mobile device while still enjoying the experience itself—don't get so focused on photography that you miss the flight.
  • Island variety: Maui has over 80 beaches and sits between the busier Oahu and quieter Kauai, making it ideal for mixing relaxation with active pursuits like hiking, water sports, and aerial tours.
  • Terrain diversity: Eight of Hawaii's thirteen world climate zones are on Maui, meaning you'll see everything from high desert to double-canopy rainforest in one tour.

Common Questions About Maui Helicopter Tours

Will I get airsick on a helicopter tour?

Pilots emphasize that modern tourism helicopters like the ECO-Star offer a surprisingly smooth, stable ride—described as lazy and clean rather than turbulent. First-time flyers are often surprised by how comfortable the experience is, though keeping your eyes moving and staying relaxed helps prevent motion sickness.

What's the best time to schedule a helicopter flight during my Maui trip?

Fly early in your vacation. This gives you an aerial overview of the island's geography and landmarks, helping you plan which ground-based hikes, beaches, and attractions to prioritize for the rest of your stay.

Can I take good photos from a helicopter?

Yes. Pilots recommend wearing dark clothes to minimize reflections in windows and keeping your camera or phone ready. However, one key tip from the video is to avoid getting so caught up in photography that you miss actually experiencing the flight—balance capturing moments with enjoying the views in real time.

What makes a helicopter tour better than driving or hiking to these sites?

Many of Maui's most dramatic features—the Hana Rainforest Preserve valleys, the Wall of Tears, and Molokai's sea-cliffs—are inaccessible or extremely difficult to reach on foot. A helicopter flight shows you large swaths of terrain in minutes and reaches vantage points that ground-based travel simply cannot offer.

Is it safe to fly with Maverick Helicopters?

Yes. Maverick holds the FAA's Diamond Award of Excellence, signifying dedication to maintenance training and aircraft safety above industry standards. The company's founder is a former pilot who personally oversees operational safety, and the fleet consists of the newest ECO-Star helicopters, which are specifically engineered for tourism.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it comes directly from four working pilots with decades of combined experience, not just marketing footage. They address the nervousness many first-time flyers feel and offer practical advice on how to actually enjoy the experience rather than obsess over capturing it.

What I appreciated most was how candid they are about the landscape diversity—the fact that Maui contains eight of the world's climate zones means you're not just seeing one type of scenery repeated. The pilots clearly love their job and know the island deeply, which comes through when they talk about favorites like the Wall of Tears and the sheer scale of the Hana Rainforest Preserve. If you're weighing whether a helicopter tour is worth your vacation budget, this video gives you the real answer: yes, especially if you schedule it early.

Get out and do stuff versus just staying  in your resort. The island's got so   much to offer whether it's the hana  rainforest or getting up to haleakala.   There's always something new to see forsure. My name is Jake Harmon, i've been flying for  about 16 years, and this is my second time with

Maverick. I flew with them 10 years ago in the  south rim of the Grand Canyon that was my first   part 135 job and had a great time out there.  And then i've been back here for about three   years out in maui and having a great time. My name  is Alex Miserandino i've been with Maverick for

I guess coming up on four years now. Felix  Retigliano. I've been flying for Maverick for   12 years. I go by Eddie I started flying in 2005.  Can you just go ahead and just describe some of   the things that you can see here by helicopter  in Maui, maybe some of your favorite things.

Yeah certainly. I mean Hawaii is very diverse.  There's eleven of the thirteen world climate zones here,   and eight of them are on Maui. So it's anything from a high desert climate to double   canopy rainforest. I mean we pretty much get just  about everything that you can check on the list

from waterfalls to aquatic life to anything  that you can imagine. We show you rainforest,   coastline, waterfalls, valleys along the way, all  things that you would have a hard time getting to   otherwise. My favorite thing to do is to fly into  the west Maui mountains, to see the Wall of Tears,

which is a really beautiful spot one of my  favorite places to show you know passengers.   North Shore Molokai the sea-cliffs some of the  tallest sea-cliffs in the world. The island's   got so much to offer whether it's the Hana  Rainforest or getting up to Haleakala. I would   say just get out and explore. What do you think is  the best parts of Maui to see from a helicopter or

your favorite part. Well I would say just the  valleys that you can't get into otherwise. You   get to see you know all the valleys and these big  sections of the Hana Rainforest Preserve which is   the largest rainforest preserved in the United  States. Yeah, it's very humbling because you just,

you know, you kind of get this big expanse of  view and it's hard to put into words. You know,   a lot of people that go on our flights with us  are first-time flyers. What advice would you have   if you could speak to a first-time flyer regarding  going on a helicopter for the first time.

First-time flyers here at Maverick, the first  thing that I always suggest to them is when you   get up in the air here and everything just kind  of get comfortable in your seat. Don't worry it's   really a pretty lazy, kind of, clean ride. It's  not like all over the place and the biggest trick

is not to stare at everything. You  got to keep your eyes moving around.   Don't get caught staring at waterfalls or whales  or rain forest or whatever is around you. It's   really easy in Hawaii to actually end up focused  on a certain point and you gotta remember to still   look around a little bit. I say wear darker  clothes you don't have as much of a reflection

which will interfere with the photo. Definitely  dark clothes. And when it comes to out here   on Maui. I would say fly maybe towards the  beginning of your vacation because then you really   get a good layout and you get an idea of maybe  more things you want to do. As we fly i would say,

you know, just enjoy the flight. You know, a lot  of people get really wrapped up and taken photos,   and they kind of miss the experience. We do  get a lot of first-timers, and I think a lot of   people are nervous just because they don't know  what to expect from the experience. You know,

they've never been in an aircraft sometimes, never  been in a helicopter. I like to describe it as   more of a magic carpet ride because everything's  very smooth and controlled. The visibility is   outstanding. The helicopters we fly at Maverick  were built specifically for the tour industry.

What are some of your favorite things to do  around here that you've come across within   the last three years living here. Well living on  in Hawaii you either have to be into going to the   beach because who's not going into going to the  beach right? So going to the beach, going hiking,

water sports, surfing, kite boarding,  you know, wind surfing stuff like that.   You into any of the outdoor activities?  You have to be if you live here yeah   why are you not taking advantage of it, so  personally i like to hike a lot. Several   hikes that i would recommend to go and check  out. Your basic ones that you're going to find

very basic info on it, and you can find it just  about anywhere is for a very amazing view into   the valley it'll be the Waihe'e Ridgeline Trail.  And then there's the Pipiwai Trail out in Hana.  Waimoku falls where you get to the base of 400  foot waterfall, yeah, and those are both pretty

tame. Yeah, I mean, other than doing a helicopter  ride of course. Yeah there's so much to do and   I think Maui is a great island because it kind  of checks all the boxes for anybody's vacation.   There's plenty of beaches, there's over 80 beaches  in Maui. Maui's, you know, not as busy as Oahu,

not as quiet as Kauai, so you can have it be  as relaxing and, you know, chilled out as you   want it to be or you can get after it and do all  the activities that the island has to offer. So   much to do and now you could be here for weeks and  weeks and not even, you know, scratch the surface.
