Overview of This Hawaii Cruise and Shore Excursion Guide

This video documents a complete Hawaii cruise aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America, visiting all the major islands over approximately one week. The traveler books seven distinct shore excursions across Oahu, Maui, Hawaii's Big Island (Hilo and Kona), and Kauai, mixing water-based activities like snorkeling and whale watching with land tours and an aerial adventure. If you're an active traveler seeking variety—combining wildlife encounters, geological exploration, and breathtaking scenic views—this real cruise experience shows exactly what to expect and helps you decide which excursions are worth the money.

The Pride of America is described as a fairly small ship with cozy cabins featuring ocean views and balconies where you might spot whales from your room. The itinerary is ideal for adventure seekers who want hands-on experiences rather than passive sightseeing, though the video's honest assessment of each excursion also reveals which ones deliver genuine value and which may disappoint.

Key Moments

Highlights from the Seven Hawaii Excursions

  • Swimming with hundreds of massive sea turtles at Waikiki Beach, Oahu—an affordable ($84) pre-cruise activity booked independently
  • Snorkeling at Molokini Crater, Maui, where dolphins raced the boat and humpback whales breached in the distance
  • Close-up whale watching in Maui waters during the December–April humpback breeding season, with a 100-yard legal approach limit
  • Helicopter tour over Kauai's waterfalls and Jurassic Park filming locations, with savings of $300 by booking directly with the operator instead of the cruise line
  • Snorkeling at Captain Cook Monument, Kona, known for abundant tropical fish
  • Visiting an active volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, though time constraints limited full enjoyment

What You Need to Know Before Booking Hawaii Cruise Excursions

  • Book the helicopter tour directly with the operator rather than through the cruise line to save approximately $300
  • Maui is the best location for whale watching December through April, when humpback whales migrate to breed; they do not eat during their six-month Hawaii stay and survive on fat reserves
  • The volcano excursion at Hilo costs around $229 and may not provide enough time to fully experience Hawaii Volcanoes National Park—consider it less worth the price than water-based activities
  • Kona requires tendering (small boat transfer) to shore, which adds time but is described as a fun experience itself; arrive early to secure a time slot
  • Snorkeling conditions can be choppy at Molokini Crater, especially on rougher days, affecting water clarity
  • Pre-cruise excursions booked through GetYourGuide (like the Waikiki turtle swim at $84) offer good value and let you explore before boarding

Frequently Asked Questions About These Hawaii Cruise Excursions

Which excursion offers the best value for money?

The Waikiki turtle snorkeling ($84, pre-cruise) and Captain Cook Monument snorkeling in Kona both deliver excellent experiences at reasonable prices. The video creator notes that the Hawaii Volcanoes tour ($229) felt overpriced relative to the time spent exploring the park.

When is the best time to go whale watching in Hawaii?

December through April is peak season for humpback whales in Hawaii waters, particularly around Maui. During these months, mothers bring calves to breed in safe, warm waters away from orcas, and you have the highest chance of close sightings within the 100-yard legal approach limit.

Should I book excursions through the cruise line or independently?

The video demonstrates that booking directly with operators—especially for the Kauai helicopter tour—can save significant money (up to $300 in this case). However, cruise-line booking offers convenience and coordination with ship schedules, which matters if you're short on time or uncomfortable arranging pickup logistics independently.

How much time do you get at each port?

The video shows two nights in Maui and two nights in Kauai, allowing for multiple excursions per island. Single-night ports like Hilo receive less exploration time, and the volcano excursion there felt rushed. Longer port stays clearly enable better experiences.

What is tendering, and does it add significant time?

Tendering is a small-boat transfer from ship to shore used at ports without direct docking (like Kona). The video describes it as a fun experience in itself; however, arriving early and securing an early time slot helps you maximize your time ashore.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely useful for anyone considering a Hawaii cruise because it shows real costs, honest assessments of each excursion's value, and practical logistics like tendering and booking strategies. The traveler doesn't oversell every experience; she clearly states which tours disappointed (the volcano excursion) and which exceeded expectations (the helicopter ride and whale watching).

What impressed me most was seeing daily life on the Pride of America—the cabin, sunset views from the deck, the variety of islands in one trip—alongside the wildlife moments (huge turtles, breaching whales, dolphins). If you want authentic, unfiltered guidance on whether a Hawaii cruise is right for you and which activities to prioritize, this is the expedition breakdown to watch before booking.

Aloha everyone join me on this Unforgettable Journey on a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands I saw whales doens snored with turtles and took a helicopter tour over where Jurassic Park was filmed so grab yourself a drink and I will share with you what it's like to go on a Hawaiian cruise around the

islands since we started our trip in aahu we stayed in aahu for 5 days before our cruise started we did some really fun EXC which we booked through get your guide one of them was swimming with turtles from w keiki beach and it was superb we saw so many turtles and they were all huge surrounding us every now

and then they would pop up right by our heads and it was such a fun experience only cost $84 [Music]

[Music] the very next day we signed up for a whale watching tour and we did see whales but later in this video we saw a lot more and a lot closer up to us so stay tuned for that cuz Mary was fantastic for well watching [Music]

we sailed around on the pride of America with Norwegian Cruise Line the ship was fairly small but perfect here is where I'm staring and it's cozy just look at the ocean view it has nice size room and the balcony gave us amazing views and we even saw humpback Wells from our balcony

so we left aahu and headed to Maui we were lucky enough to spend two nights in Maui and I'm so glad we did we signed up for two excursions both with the cruise ship the first one was a boat to go snorkeling and visit Malini crater now this day was perfect we saw do friends on the way and they raced our boat which

was super cool and we also saw a couple of whales breaching in the distance and it wasn't even a well watching tour now the snorkeling part of the trip wasn't the best because it was a bit choppy at the crater but the entire day was amazing and I would definitely recommend that trip

[Music] we finished our night by watching the

sunset on the cruise ship day two in Maui we went whale watching now I recommend going well watching in Maui because that is where most of the whales hang out during the winter months during December through April the humpback whale comes back to give birth to their calf to breed in a safe spot away from

the oras the killer whales the mother doesn't eat the entire time she's in Hawaii which is six months so she just survives on her fat reserves isn't that crazy Maui is the perfect spot to see humpbacks

down animals so we have a 100 y approach limit that's why the's not just running right up on these animals [Music] [Music]

it was a truly fabulous day so we're leaving Maui and heading to Hilo this was my least favorite Port but it's quite nice to walk around in we also signed up for a volcano tour we checked out an active volcano at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park I don't think we had enough time there to be honest to

fully enjoy the park and it was pretty pricey Excursion since since we booked it through the cruise ship I just don't think this excursion was worth the money and this particular one cost [Music]

$229 now we're leaving Hilo and heading to Kaa this is still part of the big island and it was an awesome Port but you do need to allow yourself more time to get off the cruise ship if you get up early in the morning you can get a time slot to get off the boat since you have to Tender in to the

port tendering in to the port was a fun experience if you ask me it was kind of like an Excursion on its own the Excursion we signed up for in cona was to go snorkel at Captain Cook monument and the fish are amazing in that area [Music] [Laughter]

[Music] now we're leaving cona and heading to Kawai we're spending two nights there and this island is straight out of a movie literally Jurassic Park was filmed here and the first day we took at arimoto around the island and went to papy beach where we saw loads of turtles and they were huge

and we finished our night off with another amazing sunset tomorrow is our last day on the cruise and I think we may have saved the best till last today we're taking to the Skies over Kawaii one of the most breathtaking places on Earth from towering waterfalls to the famous Coastline this helicopter tour is

the best way to see this beauty it is fantastic now we didn't book with the cruise line we booked directly with the helicopter company and they picked us up from the port and it saved us $300 I would definitely recommend this trip it was a fantastic experience [Music]

[Music]

[Music]

this has been an absolutely dream trip in Hawaii Hawaii by cruise is amazing if you're ever thinking about booking a cruise in Hawaii it you won't regret it don't forget to like comment and subscribe for More Travel Adventures Mahalo and I'll see you on the next video let me know if you've been on this
