What to Expect on This Doors-Off Oahu Helicopter Tour

This video documents a doors-off helicopter flight with Mauana Loa Helitour, departing from Honolulu airport and covering some of Oahu's most iconic coastal and landmark views. The filmmaker attached a GoPro to capture the aerial perspective while using a handheld camera for photography, giving you a genuine sense of what the experience looks and feels like from inside the aircraft. If you're considering a scenic helicopter tour review of Oahu, this footage shows the actual route, the vantage points, and the kind of views you can realistically expect to photograph and witness.

This tour is ideal for photographers, adventure seekers, and anyone wanting to see Oahu's famous landmarks—from urban Honolulu to remote valleys and military history sites—all in one flight. The doors-off format offers unobstructed camera angles and an immersive open-air experience, though it does mean exposure to wind and noise. If you're comfortable with heights and want premium aerial views without glass reflections, this style of tour delivers exactly that.

Highlights of the Mauana Loa Flight Route

  • Waikiki Beach and downtown Honolulu — The flight begins with a pass over the south shore, giving you aerial views of Oahu's urban core and famous beach from an angle you can't get from land.
  • Diamond Head and Koko Crater — These iconic volcanic landmarks appear on the route as you move eastward along the coast.
  • Haiku Stairs (Stairway to Heaven) — A brief pass-by of this famous (and officially restricted) hiking landmark nestled in the northshore valleys.
  • Kualoa Ranch and Sacred Falls — The flight heads toward these dramatic valley and waterfall locations, showcasing Oahu's lush inland scenery.
  • Pipeline and North Shore — A view of the legendary surfing break and the North Shore coastline before heading inland.
  • Dole Plantation, Wheeler Army Airfield, and Pearl Harbor — The tour concludes with passes over agricultural land, a military airfield, and the historic Pearl Harbor site.

Before You Book: What You Should Know

  • The flight departs from Honolulu airport (PHNL) and covers a comprehensive loop of Oahu's south, north, and west sides—plan for a full-length tour experience rather than a short scenic hop.
  • This is a doors-off tour, meaning no window barriers between you and the open air; you'll have unobstructed views but will be exposed to wind, noise, and the elements.
  • If photography is important to you, bring a secure camera setup and be prepared for limited maneuvering space in the helicopter—the pilot and your fellow passengers will be sharing the cabin with you.
  • Weather and scheduling can affect which sights you see and photo opportunities, so flexibility and clear skies are your allies for this tour.
  • These tours fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons; booking in advance is strongly recommended to secure your spot.

Questions About Doors-Off Helicopter Tours in Oahu

Is a doors-off helicopter tour safe?

Yes, doors-off helicopter tours operate under strict FAA regulations and safety protocols. Passengers are securely harnessed and the aircraft is engineered for this type of flight. The key is choosing a reputable operator with a strong safety record, like Mauana Loa Helitour, and following all pre-flight briefings and instructions.

What should I wear on a doors-off flight?

Wear secure, close-fitting clothing that won't flap or come loose in the wind. Avoid loose scarves, hats, or items with straps that could detach. Comfortable shoes with good grip are essential, and consider a light jacket even if it's warm on the ground—wind chill at altitude makes it noticeably cooler. Sunscreen and sunglasses are highly recommended.

Can I bring a camera on the doors-off tour?

Yes, and many people do. In the video, the filmmaker brought both a handheld camera and mounted a GoPro. Just be aware that space inside the helicopter is limited, so your ability to move and reposition your camera is restricted. Secure any loose items and consider a camera tether or strap to prevent drops.

How long is the full Oahu helicopter tour?

The video's route covers the south shore, east coast, north shore, and western landmarks including Pearl Harbor—this suggests a comprehensive tour lasting roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Confirm exact duration when booking, as flight times can vary slightly.

What's the best time of day for this tour?

Early morning or late afternoon flights typically offer the best light for photography and often have calmer wind conditions. The video was filmed in early March, a shoulder season in Hawaii with generally favorable weather. Avoid booking during rainy season (winter months) unless you're flexible about visibility.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it shows the actual route, real vantage points, and honest filming conditions—including the tight quarters and wind challenges—rather than overselling the experience. The filmmaker's note about limited space and split focus between photography and enjoyment manages expectations in a refreshing way.

What stands out is the comprehensive coverage of Oahu's landmarks in a single flight, from urban beaches to remote valleys to historic sites, all captured from an angle you simply cannot experience from the ground. If you want to see whether a doors-off tour suits your comfort level and photography ambitions, this is an authentic look that will help you decide whether to book.

Description

I attached a GoPro Hero 8 on top of my camera during a doors off helicopter flight with Muana Loa Helitour. Note - my main focus was to grab some epic photos and and enjoy the moment with my eyes, so the gopro was not a high priority. Also don't judge my hand placement on my camera at times. I had limited space to maneuver and only seconds to get certain shots. I hope you enjoy!

Flight itinerary: We start by taking off from Honolulu airport (PHNL) and head east along the south shore, flying past downtown and Waikki Beach, then Diamond Head and Koko Crater. We then turn Northwest along the shore, with a quick passby of the Haiku Stairs (Stairway to Heaven). We then head towards the Kualoa Ranch and Sacred Falls. We hug the northshore viewing the pipeline before we head south over the Dole Plantation. We fly directly over Wheeler Army Airfield and head to Pearl Harbor.
