What to Expect on a Big Island Helicopter Waterfall Tour
This helicopter tour review captures a scenic flight along Hawaii's Big Island, focusing on the northeast coast and its dramatic waterfall-carved valleys. The tour departs from a local airfield and flies along the Hamakua Coast, showcasing the volcanic geology and water erosion that created some of the island's most spectacular natural features. The pilot serves as your guide, offering geological context and local knowledge while passengers sit in a four-seat aircraft with individual headsets for two-way communication.
This experience suits travelers who want to see remote waterfalls, dramatic sea cliffs, and volcanic landscape without hiking for hours. It's ideal for photography enthusiasts, geology lovers, and anyone seeking a unique bird's-eye view of Hawaii's windward side. The flight is smooth and relaxed for most of the route, though the pilot warns of potential minor turbulence when flying through valleys—nothing extreme, but worth knowing in advance.
Key Moments
Highlights of the Northeast Coast Waterfall Route
Cocka Falls—a 400-foot waterfall visible along the lower slopes of the northeast side, the first of many water features on the route
The Kohala Valleys—towering cliff faces and giant waterfalls where erosion from ancient rivers has carved massive gorges; the cliffs rise above the helicopter's altitude
Mauna Kea at 13,800 feet—a dormant volcano visible from the air, with context on how to visit the summit and watch sunset over Maui from the visitor center
Rainbow eucalyptus groves—extensive planted forests covering the landscape, with the story of a failed commercial venture that left these distinctive trees behind
Hamakua Coast Highway 11—the scenic coastal road below, featured with recommendations for stops, local barbecue in Waimea, and jungle-cut scenic detours
Coastal water conditions—visible algae bloom from recent hurricane runoff and evidence of the steep ocean shelf just miles offshore
What You Should Know Before Booking Your Flight
Safety briefing required—all passengers watch a safety video and wear seat belts; microphones are muted during takeoff and landing but active during flight for questions and conversation
Seating arrangement—pairs of passengers share a headset in the back; everyone has clear sightlines to either the left or right, so seat choice matters for what you'll see
Weather and visibility—clouds can obscure Mauna Kea and interior views; the pilot may adjust the route slightly to find clear pockets, but conditions on the day determine what's visible
Windy conditions—the northeast coast experiences consistent trade winds creating whitecaps and rough ocean conditions; this also means fewer small boats offshore
Valley turbulence—expect possible minor bumps when flying through the deep valleys where waterfalls are located; the pilot gives advance warning
Photography opportunity—bring a camera or phone; the windows are open to the scenery and the pilot is aware that passengers want to capture images
Common Questions About Big Island Helicopter Waterfall Tours
How long is the flight?
The video does not specify an exact tour duration, though the flight shown covers the northeast coast, Mauna Kea, and the Kohala Valleys with educational stops. Contact the operator directly for total flight time and whether multiple tour lengths are available.
Is this tour suitable for first-time helicopter passengers?
Yes. The pilot specifically asked passengers about first-time helicopter experience and reassured nervous fliers that the ride would be smooth and relaxed, with no extreme maneuvers. The pilot even joked about saving barrel rolls for future trips, emphasizing a comfortable experience.
What makes the northeast side have so many waterfalls while the south does not?
The northeast slopes are part of older, dormant volcanoes where water has had millions of years to carve deep river channels and valleys. The south side has active volcanoes that erupt frequently, covering slopes with fresh lava that prevents rivers from forming. This geological difference is why all the major waterfalls cluster on the northeast coast.
Can you visit the waterfalls by ground instead of by air?
The video does not cover ground-based waterfall access, but the pilot does recommend the Hamakua Coast Highway 11 as a beautiful scenic drive with stops at beach parks and bays. Some waterfalls may be accessible from the road, but the helicopter provides views of remote falls you cannot reach on foot.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
The video does not specify a seasonal recommendation. Weather conditions, cloud cover, and wind patterns vary throughout the year, so it's best to check with the tour operator about current conditions and book during a weather window when visibility is optimal.
This video is genuinely helpful because the pilot combines stunning aerial views with solid geological and historical context—you're not just seeing waterfalls, you're learning why they exist and what shaped the landscape. The pilot's patient, friendly demeanor and willingness to answer passenger questions in real time shows what a good helicopter tour operator sounds like, setting expectations for both the experience and the professionalism you should expect when booking.
What I liked best was the pilot's explanation of why the northeast coast has countless rivers and waterfalls while the south side remains dry—that single piece of geology context transforms the flight from sightseeing into understanding the island itself. If you want an aerial tour that combines natural beauty with education and a relaxed, safe atmosphere, this is a strong example to base your choice on.

[Music] all right everybody uh can I get a quick thumbs up did everybody watch the safety briefing video beautiful and I see everyone's wearing their seat belts looking good um feel free to use those microphones that you have all you want you two each have your own microphone back there and then you two will share
that one uh the only time that we're not going to use them is just during takeoff and Landing so right now they are muted but any other time I'll let you guys know when I turn them on and uh we can chat all we want ask questions have conversations all that good stuff but in the meantime enjoy the music I'm going
to get that clearance and now we're going to get on out of [Music] here for you and for me a l o a j little Aloha in our spread a little Aloha around the
world a l o h a littlea in our day spread a little Aloha around the world could you imagine all around the world a littlea in every boy and
girl could you imagine how simple life could be with a little aloh in you and me all right everybody here we [Music]
go tell me something that I don't know give nothing beloving hope I hope I can find my paradise and deep down under and all I've seen beyond the Wonders and still I dream I know I can make that sacrifice what is hopeless and what is
real I wish I knew how I feel I hope I can find that love inside give me a shelter bring me along there's a place where we all belong still I wonder where's my [Music]
paradise and my [Music] Parise how did the darkness show me the way we all get lost we've all been astray hold me close and tell me everything's all right the world keep turning s goes down
moment of silence greatest sound still I wonder where's my Paradise [Music] oh my [Music] there I'm Parise
[Music] [Music]
all right everybody we are up and moving as in comes those microphones they are officially open welcome everybody to the Halo airspace how's everyone feeling so far everyone doing okay all right beautiful perfect I saw you pointing over there to the right brother where you pointing at the
at the line on the water yeah it's from that hurricane we got a bunch of rain and a whole bunch of runoff came out from all the um from all the rivers and it creates a little bit of a Green Layer a lot of times that's like a little bit of an algae bloom that happens and that's kind of where that solid line is
that you see out there I'm waiting for all that to kind of go away I do a lot of spear fishing out here and that makes the water a little bit murky along the shoreline here I bet on the outside of that green line the water's super clear on the inside there is still a little bit of a
murkiness but not too bad it's still uh pretty clear but not as clear as it can be [Music] [Music] [Music]
Parise and really beautiful over here we're flying along the Haku rout uh this road that we're passing over right now this is this highway this is um Highway 11 this is the the the road that goes around the Hamakua Coast uh cut s hona over towards wame it's a really beautiful drive it's a little out of the
way if you're trying to get back over to Kona W Colo area it will take you a little bit longer to take this route um across the island but I recommend it for anybody that has a little bit of time to kill and wants to just like enjoy the drive because it's beautiful a lot of really great places where you can stop
much little like there's like uh some Beach Parks a few Bays some Scenic uh roads that cut off from the main Highway they go through the jungle it's and then once you get to Y you can stop and get uh lunch there there's a bunch of really good places where you can get stuff especially like if you want some
barbecue there uh cuz there's that's a ranching community and there's a bunch of places where you can get really good meats uh definitely a great a great Drive well worth it singing songsod pure and true this is my message to you
singing Don't wor s going to be all right say don't wor and everybody we are on our way to go to um the best waterfalls on the
island in my opinion uh actually pretty much everyone's opinion it's absolutely beautiful up there we're heading over to The Valleys over along the they call also call them the Calas because it's just along the Kahala volcano and uh up there we're going to see these gorgeous uh valleys amazing giant waterfalls
there's actually you're not going to be able to see it from the right side of the helicopter I apologize but down low on the leth hand side is a waterfall down here called the cocka Falls it's a really pretty waterfall it's about 400 ft tall don't worry we're going to see way taller waterfalls when we get up
there but um as we continue along these uh the slopes of uh of the Northeast side of the island here it's countless rivers and waterfalls along this section this is where they all are and that's because we're flying along the slopes of old volcanoes that haven't erupted in a long time that's allowed water to carve
paths and create these Rivers cuz it takes a really long time for them to form um along the south side of the island we have active volcanoes because they erupt so much they Reco their slopes with lava and that keeps that water from creating those rivers and creating those paths that's why we have all the rivers and
waterfalls along this part of the island [Music] only be all right
[Music] so I didn't uh get to ask earlier is this anybody's first time in a helicopter okay everybody else has been in helicopter before cool all right were you nervous a little bit okay right on no worries I am too no I'm just kidding I'm just joking all it's going to be a nice smooth ride
uh the whole way there we're going to have a great time it's going to be nice and relaxed we might uh in all transparency we might get a couple little bumps when we get in the valley but I'll warn you about that ahead of time but alt together it's going to be a nice smooth flight I won't do any barrel
rolls today I'll save those for another day next next time you come [Music] through but yeah this island is beautiful it's really widespread uh way more spread out way less popular than aahu and way bigger right and along this area um we have a lot of uh agriculture a lot of pasture a lot of Farms all that
stuff and also some a lot of uh Groves of trees like what are you pointing out over there oh the the the the gold right there yeah so that's nothing uh that is beautiful but when we get to The Valleys same thing as that but way bigger where even at this altitude The Cliffs are above
us um so yeah so remember how I was talking about how the water digs into the ground and creates those Rivers eventually it creates those and then as it keeps digging away way and creating erosion it'll eventually create giant valleys and that's what we're going to see when we get to the north side of the
island [Music]
he I wanted to cut on the inside of the island just a little bit right here instead of being on the shoreline cuz I wanted to show you something cuz the clouds I knew were cleared up in this little section and I wanted you guys to be able to see Mona over here on the Le hand side for a moment Mona here is one
of our volcanoes this is a dormant volcano this one hasn't erupted uh in somewhere around 4600 years but it's the tallest peak in Hawaii that's a dormant volcano um it's 13,800 ft high at the summit um to give you an idea for just how tall that is we're almost almost 4,000 ft off sea
level so we'd have to climb another about uh about almost 10,000 ft to get up to that Summit so it's actually way taller than it looks and uh really beautiful up there you can go up to the summit if you have four-wheel drive and you can watch the sunset over Maui which you can see in front of us in the
distance beyond the clouds that's hakala way over there uh that's one of the old uh volcanoes on Maui but yeah you um from over here in Mona you can watch the sun set over Maui and then you would drive down after Sunset to The Visitor Center which sits at 9200 ft and from there you can see the stars beautifully
it's really amazing you are the one who can make us all but doing that you break and te please don't be S if it was a straight my new head we wouldn't even have know you all these [Music]
so if you notice these Groves of trees right below us you can see how they're fairly uniform all of a sudden they're all the same uh species of tree and all the same height and everything these are all rainbow eucalyptus trees down below us and they were planted here there's a company that came out here purchased
bunch of land and started planting all this rainbow eucalyptus all over the place they were planning on using them uh they're going to Mill it I'm not sure if it was for paper products or for lumber but either way they're going to use these trees for that right well they started buying the land and planting the
trees before they got their permits they got denied their permits and so they went through litigation they bought it they lost they tried to repurpose the trees to sell for fuel to burn uh kept losing they didn't get their permits and uh eventually went bankrupt and they left the island and just left all these
trees out here they are really pretty though and I was actually speaking to somebody that has his own little uh they have their own little farm and uh rainbow eucalyptus I guess a lot of pest uh insects don't like rainbow eucalyptus so they'll plant some of their herbs and vegetables around a a young rainbow
eucalyptus tree to keep all those pests away from their plants pretty pretty smart it's a new new day and a new way don't let the P control the that's today no more problem need more solution take your guidance Let the
Right lead the [Music] way this part of the island is usually decently windy we get uh wind that blows directly in front of us so we have a pretty aome Tailwind but that's what makes all these white caps on the water that's why it's all splashing around down there um but that's that's also why
you often times don't see small vessels on the water in this area cuz the water can tend to get kind of rough some the time but really nice out here and another interesting thing about this part of the coast is that there's no Channel no continental shelf offshore here in some of the areas of of Hawaii
when you're on the beaches and everything it's a really gradual slope so it stays shallow for a good little bit um but out here once you're about 3 mil offshore off the east side of Big Island here it's already about 2 mies deep that slope just continues all the way down to the bottom of the ocean that's also part
of the reason why we get a lot of push through this section of the island and why as it gets more shallow in the channel between Maui and and big island where so many currents developed right there because all that heavy push funnels into these more shallow areas feeling it's a new day new dawn
New Horizon sun shining they've been trying to find me I was stuck out on that but I started smoking signals with my people in the Sham walking on the CLS looking for the Silver Lining I just want to fast forward yesterday was rten today is going to be all mine no other Vibes forgotten we'll just keep on
rocking cuz ain't no other rtion when you roll with kings and queens better days are quite it feel like you yest don't you don't youbody might not believe me but trust me when I say today's a new day all you Broken Ground
[Music] away [Applause] [Music] [Applause] what day BR so a the hakua coaster there used to be a lot of sugarcane plantations uh they used to grow a lot of sugarcane out here and uh all that sugarcane would get pushed down or or
get sent down some old railroads to go to hedo Bay to get exported from there uh there used to be trains that ran up and down this all the time but over the years number one we stopped uh producing sugar cane out here we just couldn't compete with other uh with other uh States and other countries So eventually
the sugar cane stopped and on top of that between the storms the T nomies all that stuff the railroad tracks were pulling apart So eventually the the uh they stopped using the railroad system as well out here so there's no more train that runs through here and even actually if you go into some of the
rivers underneath the bridges along uh along the Homa Coast you'll see remnants of those railroad systems a bunch of uh railroad tracks that are have fallen into the uh into those rivers in different areas afteron hotter than the month of June so we go beach now down cool down where the water's
right yeah let's grab our boards and run r r run to the nearest shore school is proud let's go now and H out the door yeah the wind is on fire the day is getting hot this is my desire that want to the spot [Music]
cool down the waves is on fire the day is getting hot this is my want to the spot cool down the wat's looking nice and blue so blue so Bluer Than the clear sky all right everybody we're actually
already coming up to the valleys uh so these Cliffs have been grab gradually getting a little bit taller and all of a sudden right in front of us those walls these are the valleys that I'm talking about and once we get under the shadows of these clouds you're going to be able to see them a lot better A bunch of
giant cascading waterfalls all along these Cliffs we're going to fly along different sections of this area maybe you pop into a couple of The Valleys absolutely gorgeous my favorite place on the island to fly this first Valley right here is wild people Valley this is the Valley of the
Kings absolutely gorgeous in here uh there is a community that lives here still uh but back in the day King Kamehameha II used to live here there's a really steep road that runs down there uh only uh residents can actually drive down but anybody can visit as long as you get a ride from somebody um there
are wild horses that roam around down here there's big waterfalls in the back of this Valley it's Absol it's really a a special place here and on the way back up uh you'll get a better view on your side of the helicopter for that so you can get some good pictures and I'll slow it down for you
[Music]
oh [Music] [Music]
and we're going to go into this Valley right here this is W Manu Valley beautiful Valley uh we're going to go and check out this first water ball in the back it's called W kah absolutely gorgeous spot right here and uh when I we go in here we will get a few bumps here and there I'll try to keep it a
smooth as possible but just a little heads up w [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
[Music] [Applause] [Music]
all [Music] [Music] [Music]
[Music] this is where I'm expecting just a couple bumps but nothing crazy in the corner here on the right hand side those are the tallest waterfalls in Hawaii right there [Music]
oh [Music] [Applause] [Music]
h [Music] [Music]
[Applause] [Music] oh [Music]
[Music] absolutely beautiful in there that Valley is really difficult to get to on the ground there is a hike that goes to it from Valley but it's pretty long you have to go up these Cliffs down through all these GES across all these rivers and then back down a really big Cliff to get there it's about 10 mies
one way and about a 3 3500t elevation change but well worth it if you're able to make it in there [Music]
to [Music] say all [Music] [Music]
I've always wanted to uh go to these rocks right here off of a boat and do some spear fishing or snorkeling or even scuba diving along this area I here it's a really amazing place to go just pretty difficult to get to and this water can get pretty treacherous sometimes so you would don't
really want to swim to it from one of the shores [Music]
[Music] are you pointed at that cut out where there's no uh yeah so we get a lot of
erosion we get set chunks of the cliffs that just break off from time to time it's pretty wild [Music] leads to also the fact that the Hawaiian archipelago is actually a lot bigger than everybody thinks everyone knows the main eight Islands but there's actually over 130 Hawaiian Islands they stretch a
thou 1,500 Mi to the West they're just so small because they've broken apart so much that they're just like little sandb bars or little Pinnacles that are barely sticking out of the water or Reef systems of tolls that are just under the surface in the middle of the ocean and uh over time you know over thousands of
millions of years big island is going to be the same way it's going to become this small Little Rock just just on off the surface and we're going to have a whole new set of islands out here in fact actually there's a there's a volcano to the southeast of this island underwater that's already working on a
new island it's called the Loui SE M and it's about 3,000 ft under water right [Music] now and think to myself what a one wonderful the col of the rainbow so
pretty in the sky I also wonder the faces of people passing by see FR shaking and singing how do you do they really sing I I love you I hear babies cry and that was them
go they'll learn much more then we'll know and think to myself what a wonderful [Music]
everybody going to save theirself make the cool on porno for help the A and when you make your Co on a you know porno it's going it's like kind of automatic CL you don't need talk the stuff that white Mansion there on the right hand side with that blue pool and that slide coming down uh I don't know
if you get if any of you guys watched that show love Island but that's on that show it's one of on one of the seasons uh was filmed there I guess rainbow so pretty in the sky I also wonder the faces of people passing by see FR shaking and singing how do you
do they really see I I love you I love you I hear baby SK and I watch them go they'll learn much more then we'll know and think to
myself what a wonderful Mo What a Wonder [Music] wonderful beautiful homes all along this area this is a really um sought-after uh
location on the island to live and um a lot of these Cliffs side homes are really nice but we kind of talked about a little of the erosion you pointed out that section of the cliff back collapse back there I personally would be a little comfortable after flying around here for a while and seeing sections
where the cliffs break down I'd be a little worried about having one of these Cliff side homes and in fact there's a home over by in front of a beach called honi Over by town by Hilo that was selling a few years ago for like I forget like 1.5 million 1.8 million something like that and uh it sold and
then a while later part of the cliff collapsed and part of the property and uh and part of the house went with it no one got hurt but then I saw that prop selling for like 400,000 after that so like after seeing everything I've seen out here I'd be like yeah you know I'd rather be on the Inland side of the
highway probably you can still see the beach uh you still get that breeze but you know you got a little more security from all that the Hawai roller Coter all right everybody I got to talk to Tower really quick I will be right back you guys can talk to each other if you like it's not going to mess with me
I'm just not going to be listening for about a minute or two and then I'll be back with [Music] you [Music] no where I the Beyond the
[Music] Horizon it's time to try the Hawaiian Roller Coaster [Music] the motion of the swir cascading
[Music] he [Music]
there's no place be lingering in the ocean blue Sur till the Suns Beyond the Horizon [Music] flying by on the hawaian roller coaster [Music]
[Music] all right I'm back with [Music]
you and this is aname Bay here on the right hand side there's a Botanical Garden right here uh that's where that jungle uh little scenic route is and the Botanical Garden is gorgeous uh you can walk through there they have all these different species of orchids and different plants uh in a whole little
history of the bay and how this family uh built it up and fixed it and made it a bio preserve for people to come visit it's a really gorgeous spot to to go check [Music] out I heard the story told but yeah everybody um sadly we're on our
way back to the airport but I hope you all had a great time F we had a great time with you beautiful afternoon to go check out the valleys and the waterfalls uh thank you all very much for choosing blue Hawai and fly with once again my name was David or chewy whichever you prefer is my pleasure to be a p for
today hope you guys enjoy the rest of your time IR Hawaii and safe travels. home um we are going to have to shut down those microphones for the last couple minutes here but enjoy the last little bit of the view and the music when we get on the ground don't worry about opening the doors we'll do on that
for you just relax we'll do all the heavy [Music] lifting is never the same never the same this is Once in a [Applause] [Music] time I've been running in circles i' been Shades in the sun I guess I'm
looking for something but I just don't know why everything has a purpose everyone has their thoughts why does it feel so UNC why you running around head Ain EAS there leave it up to me a perfect place to
be a perfect place to be I'm not running away I'm calling out escap take me away this place is never the same never the same this is in a long
time [Applause] [Music]
something's F in this feeling S I refuse to get there oh oh [Music] more there's a here when the truth comes
clear you can find it here oh oh God I'm done running away come and I will escape but take me away this place is
never the same never same this is one time yeah but I'm done running away it's something I can explain ready for Change and know I can't stay CU now
saying this is Once In A L [Music] time all right everybody back on the ground once again hope you guys had a great time plan and uh we'll be getting out in just a moment [Music]
[Music]
another beautiful spot is um over here this waterfall that's about our 1:00 coming down that's a 700t waterfall that's La knew it uh I'm going to bank it over so you guys can see it a little bit better but at the base of it um that is one of our Landing sites so we actually land there there's a green
patch on the ground right there you can actually land three helicopters right there [Music]
oh [Music] all right I'm going to do a little S turn here so you get get a better look at yo here give me just a moment [Music]
oh [Music] [Applause] [Music]
h [Music]
[Music] [Music] [Music]
[Music] absolutely beautiful in there that's my favorite place on the island of fly just non-stop waterfalls really beautiful ones including some of the tallest ones in the state and uh actually some of some one of them is uh the tallest or top 10 tallest waterfalls in the world and it's a 2,600 ft tall but altogether
just a really magical place and a lot of those Valley like w Manu that we flew into it's really difficult to access so it's really amazing to get to pop in there check all that out for a quick minute and checking out the entire Coastline around there [Applause] [Music]
[Music] so if you guys noticed this is all Cliff sides all over this area right there's not really much uh uh Beach entry there's no way that you can get in and out of the beach easily it's all just waves crashing on rocks around this area um so I got a story about why that's significant there was a a tour
helicopter that was flying through this area and they were just cruising along and they looked in the water and they saw all these sharks circling around and they're like what the heck are they doing down there and they had a couple minutes to spare so they they dropped down a little bit and checked it out
closer and as they look closely at the middle of the circle of sharks they saw two people waving at them there two people in the the water no boats around no anything that's not a place that you want to be floating around in the water so the the pilot obviously realized it was an emergency got on the emergency
frequency contacted search and rescue and then hovered over those people to keep an eye on them cuz I don't know if you know this but from up here spotting a person in the water is like next to Impossible if they don't have anything to use to like help signal you so they hovered over them keeping an eye on them
until eventually another tour helicopter came by and they tagged out cuz that first one was starting to get low on fuel so they tagged out luckily and uh the next one hovered there for a while waiting for search and rescue and then search and rescue finally made it not finally you know they just can't be
there in a second you know they got to get across the island but they showed up hoisted the people out of the water totally safe they were just super dehydrated and it turned out that these people were visitors that came out here and went down to wopo valley the Valley of the Kings back there and they without
talking to any locals without learning about the conditions in the water out here without using any sort of gear like fins or buoys or anything they decided to go swimming and they got swept out by the current and they were just getting pulled down this way and eventually they would have been pulled out to the open
ocean and it's really thanks to those sharks circling around them that they got they got saved in the first place Super Lucky Lost In Paradise Paradise [Music]
yeah if you guys did take the the drive up the Hamakua Coast it would take you over to this town hona that's that town just a little up the up the hill over there from there the the road starts to turn inward over towards Yo which is that um that ranching Community but there's a little side road from Huka
that splits off that goes down to wo Valley so you could stand over the valley and actually look into it from the ground you don't really realize how big it is until you're on the ground standing right in front of it it's pretty amazing but um that's something that you can do as well and then over in
y or Y you can get some food over like the the white Maya butcher shop is a really good place to eat [Music] hello can I know what this Plantation are for Plantation please the plantation um there you mean like right
here I missed which one you were probably talking about there's a bunch of different Farms there's a lot of pasture out here as well uh they grow there's a lot of Agriculture so they grow a bunch of different stuff at the different Farms there used to be a sugar cane a bunch of sugarcane plantations
out here but those were abandoned a long time ago thank you yeah of course you're [Music] welcome to the nearest shore school is let's go now and H out the door yeah the waves is on fire the
day is this is [Music] my so we spoke about spoke about the rainbow eucalyptus trees that got brought out here to to Mill um people also brought Alesia trees out here which are really pretty the the ones with a really wide canopy and um they brought those out here because
they grow really fast out here so they were stoked on them they were like awesome we'll grow these out here we'll use them for lumber we'll make a bunch of money but it turns out that them growing really fast out here is is a big problem because they grow too fast where the wood becomes really brittle and it
breaks apart so it's actually junk wood when it grows out here and those albesia trees they got introduced out here and they throw seeds around like nobody's business so now those albesia trees grow everywhere and every time a hurricane or a storm hits those branches just break off all the time and just fall all over
the place but regardless they're really pretty trees um from the air they look kind of like broccoli and when we get closer to Hilo I'll Point some of those out is getting hot this is my want to [Music] spot did any of you guys come from the uh Kona W coloa side over here to Hilo
you guys all did okay so you may have noticed then the complete difference in the rain the landscape the trees the vegetation all that stuff it's like a night and day difference uh over here it's all beautiful and green even looking up at Mona you see that it starts to turn yellow uh a little bit
pretty much the weather comes in on the east side of the island here and comes over the land and starts raining on this side but because of these giant volcanoes in the middle of the island we have mon right here on the other side of mon we have monoa uh they act as a big shield and
that stops the weather from making it across the island into the west side so all the weather stops over here in Hilo for example we get about 140 to 170 in of rain a year we almost double Seattle with our rainfall Kona gets about 10 or 20 it's a huge huge difference that's why you you
see pretty much solid lines in different areas of the island for where the everything completely changes and that's why they say that Hawaii especially this island has microclimates I mean in a short distance Everything Changes dramatically and even with the elevation uh that's why Mona has its name Mona
that translates to White Mountain because we get snow on the top of that volcano every now and then so the top of will be white cap from all that snow and in fact I got some friends that snowboard up there a few times a year pretty cool [Music]
[Music] have you ever felt the light of the Moon have you ever trying to scream in silence never look back no use hardly ever wanted was to live on an island I never let a good man down have you ever seen a sad man smiling never understood
this world all I really wants leave it up leave it up [Music] now so we talked about the wind a little bit ago like how it's just super windy out here it's always blowing from in front of us back behind us so we're flying into the wind right now you can see these trees All Along The Cliff side
are all blown over to one side because that wind is always going in that direction it makes the GRE the trees all grow in One Direction it's pretty funny have you ever seen a break in clown the rains falling down but the sunshine shining you get lost in the sound Turn It Up loud with the
South I wonder where you go when you die a mystery but i s I don't want to wait so long all you got to do is leave it up leave it up now leave it up leave it up now the
stor leave it up leave it up now [Music] [Music]
[Music] Close Your Eyes For a [Music] Moment focus on the air that you breae think of thoughts and now [Music] hold now you're slipp to a dream and now you slip
[Music] away to another place above the stor and Rain your miles away your miles [Music]
way just now we can off to you want some love and I do it just because I find a [Music] way just is on the time we've been never time the story of get with [Music] me I've been holding on for years I've
been facing all these days and not so I don't know if any of you guys have ever wondered why this island well a couple things number one why it's the biggest island and why it's the only island with active volcano but that's because the Hawaiian Islands were actually made one at a time right
here where the big island is there's this one hot spot that feeds the volcano on This Island right well every Hawaiian island started right here so Kawaii was made right here by the volcanoes by the hot spot and then the tectonic plates the the Pacific uh plate to be specific um pushes the island over the West
Northwest they move it about a rate of a centimeter to an inch a year So eventually Kawaii moves over uh clears out the space and then a wahoo forms and develops and then it slides over then Maui's formed and it moves over and now finally big island so as they move over the volcanoes die out
well they also break apart and get smaller as they move over so like Maui for example actually used to be bigger than the big island is now and it broke apart into Maui L mikai and kahoa as it moved over and the same thing will eventually start to happen to Big Island they've already identified big cracks in
the ground along different SE of the island and those cracks eventually are going to get deeper and longer until sections of the of the island break off and crumble into the ocean or the island splits into smaller Islands which is going to take a really really long time we're not going to see much of that but
