Overview of the Litli-Hrútur Volcano Helicopter and Hiking Experience

This video documents a dual approach to witnessing Iceland's active Litli-Hrútur volcano: first by helicopter tour from Reykjavík, then by foot from a remote car park. The creator's journey shows both the aerial perspective—ideal when ground access is restricted—and the immersive ground-level experience once the hiking path reopened. The helicopter portion offers sweeping views of the eruption site without physical exertion, while the hiking segment delivers an up-close encounter with the volcanic landscape and active lava activity. This is suited to travelers with moderate-to-good fitness who want flexibility in how they experience an active volcanic eruption, whether time-constrained or adventurous enough for a challenging multi-hour trek.

The experience takes place in southwestern Iceland, based from Grindavík, and involves either booking a commercial helicopter flight or accessing the hiking trailhead via hitchhiking to Car Park 1. The video's dual format means viewers can assess which method fits their schedule, budget, and physical capability—or understand why combining both offers the most complete view of the eruption.

Highlights of This Iceland Volcano Experience

  • Helicopter aerial views of the active eruption site and surrounding volcanic terrain, captured on the creator's first helicopter flight
  • The dramatic moment of arrival at Litli-Hrútur after completing the full hiking route, with live volcanic activity visible
  • A challenging 20 km return hike via Path A from Car Park 1, showcasing the landscape difficulty and physical demands
  • Contrasting perspectives: high-altitude helicopter reconnaissance versus ground-level immersion in the volcanic zone
  • Real-time documentation of path closure and reopening, showing how volcano access conditions change rapidly in Iceland
  • Footage of hitchhiking from Grindavík to the remote trailhead, illustrating practical transport options for independent travelers

What to Know Before Hiking or Flying to Litli-Hrútur

  • Hiking distance and difficulty: The route shown is a 20 km return walk via Path A—described as very challenging—requiring strong endurance and proper footwear
  • Access points: Car Park 1 serves as the main trailhead; reaching it from Grindavík is possible by hitchhiking
  • Trail closure risk: The video emphasizes that paths to active eruptions may close without notice due to safety or volcanic conditions; always verify access before planning
  • Helicopter booking: Commercial operators run flights from Reykjavík; these bypass hiking entirely and work well when ground access is restricted
  • Timing: The video suggests booking helicopter tours as a backup option when your primary plan (hiking) becomes unavailable due to closures
  • Solo vs. group travel: The creator undertook both the helicopter flight solo and the hiking trip with a companion, showing both approaches are viable
  • Weather and daylight: No specific weather details are mentioned, but Icelandic volcano tours demand flexibility; bring layers and check conditions daily

Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting Litli-Hrútur

Can you hike to the eruption site, or is a helicopter the only option?

Both are possible, but hiking access depends on official path status. The video shows the hiking route was closed during one visit but reopened in time for a second trip. Always check current access restrictions before booking; helicopter tours are a reliable alternative when trails are shut.

How long does the helicopter tour take?

The video does not specify exact flight duration, but shows it as a shorter, weather-dependent alternative to hiking. Contact tour operators in Reykjavík for precise flight times and scheduling.

Is the 20 km hike suitable for casual walkers?

No—the video explicitly describes the route as "very challenging." It requires good fitness, proper hiking boots, and mental endurance. If you prefer a gentler experience, the helicopter option avoids the physical demands entirely.

What equipment is essential for the hike?

The video does not detail specific gear requirements, but given the 20 km distance and volcanic terrain, sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing in layers, water, and snacks are clearly necessary. Research current conditions and pack accordingly.

How do you reach Car Park 1 from Grindavík?

The video shows hitchhiking as a viable method. Alternatively, rental cars or organized shuttle services may be available; check locally once you arrive in Grindavík, as options can vary seasonally.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it shows both methods of experiencing an active volcano, including the real-world complications (trail closures, rebooked flights, last-minute decisions) that independent travelers actually face. It doesn't romanticize the hike or oversell the helicopter; instead, it documents both honestly.

What stands out most is how the creator captures the moment of arrival at Litli-Hrútur after the long hike—that payoff makes the 20 km effort feel worthwhile—and how the helicopter footage gives context to the scale and geography you'd otherwise only understand on foot. If you're planning your own Iceland volcano trip, this dual perspective is invaluable, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend watching it before deciding your approach.

Description

returned solo to Iceland to hike to the active eruption site, but sadly the path was closed so my last day in Reykjavík i decided to book a helicopter tour, what a incredible experience that was, as well as my first time in a Helicopter, the view was incredible. When i returned bacl to London we heard that the path had reopened, so me and Daniela decided to book a last minute flight. We stayed in Grindavik, from there we hitchhike all the way to car park 1, then we hiked path A, it was a total 20km return very challenging walk, but the show when we arrived at Litli-Hrútur was breathtaking.
