Overview of These 11 Amazon Products for Van Life

Sara and Alex James, founders of Custom Crafted Vans, walk through their favorite Amazon picks that transform the daily experience of living in a van. The video focuses on real solutions to the constraints of small spaces—lightweight materials, secured storage, and clever organization systems that prevent chaos while driving. Whether you're in a part-time rental, full-time build, or traveling with family, these products address practical pain points van lifers face.

The video is shot inside their own custom van, giving you a realistic look at how each product functions in an actual living space. From tank treatments to folding car seats, the selections balance functionality with the reality that everything in a van must earn its weight and footprint.

What Van Lifers Should Know About These Products

  • Tank treatment essentials: Use biodegradable chemical-free formulas (like Camco) multiple times per week; spray the toilet bowl after use if you have a urine-diverting toilet without a flush
  • Material choices matter: Avoid ceramic dishes and breakable items; stick to lightweight plastic, melamine, or enamel alternatives
  • Cabinet security is critical: Magnetic latches on upper cabinets and adjustable ball latches on drawers prevent items flying out while driving; ball latches can be tensioned for heavy drawers
  • Shallow cabinet depths: Van kitchen cabinets are typically only 18–19 inches deep, so pull-out trash cans must be selected with that constraint in mind
  • Removable storage flexibility: Portable storage units in closets can be taken out entirely if you need to fit larger items, unlike built-in shelving
  • Portable power solutions: Installing a 110-volt outlet under the kitchen sink allows you to charge and store a handheld vacuum in that same tight space

Common Questions About Van Life Amazon Products

Why is tank treatment so important in van life?

Van tanks for sinks, toilets, and showers are small and sealed. Without regular treatment, food particles, waste, and moisture create odors that spread quickly through a confined space. Biodegradable tank treatments break down waste and neutralize smells before they become a problem.

What happens if you use regular ceramic dishes in a van?

Ceramic dishes are heavy and break easily during travel vibrations and sudden stops. The video recommends lightweight plastic, melamine, or enamel alternatives that won't shatter inside your living space and won't waste precious storage weight capacity.

How do magnetic and ball latches differ?

Magnetic latches work for lighter items in upper cabinets to prevent contents from spilling while driving. Ball latches are adjustable and stronger, making them better for drawers and doors with heavier contents—you can increase tension by moving the balls closer together.

Can you actually use folding car seats for lounging?

Yes. When parked at a campsite for extended periods, you can remove and store the folding car seats (they compress into a backpack), freeing up the seating area and giving your family more flexible lounge space during downtime.

Why does van kitchen cabinet depth matter for trash cans?

Van kitchens are typically only 18–19 inches deep compared to 24 inches in a house kitchen. Standard pull-out trash cans won't fit. The video shows specific shallow-profile models designed to fit that constraint without wasting other under-sink storage space.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely useful because it moves past flashy design and addresses the daily friction points of van living—odors, breakage, chaos while driving, and the reality of minimal storage depth. The presenters know van life from the inside and speak from real experience, not theory.

What I appreciated most is the focus on securing everything while mobile; the magnetic and ball latch section alone saves you from the nightmare of cabinets flying open on a rough road. If you're building or renting a van, this is exactly the kind of practical guidance you need. Highly worth watching.

today I'm going to be sharing the 11 best Amazon products for Van life whether you're traveling part-time full-time maybe you're just renting a van you're going to want to make sure you have these things in your space to keep it functional organized and there's a little bonus one at the end if you

have kids or grandkids coming with [Music] you number one is tank treatment people overlook this all the time and it's something that you're going to want to to make sure that your tanks stay clean and nice and there's no odors coming up from your tank so we have a tank for a sink one for the toilet and one for the

shower and we always use this multiple times a week this is our favorite brand it is Camco all these products will be linked down in the description this is our favorite one it doesn't have any fahid or nasty chemicals in it so it is biodegradable when you dump and a side tip related to this we fill some up in a

spray bottle with water and then we use this with our toilet every time after we pee we spray down the toilet bowl with this because we do not have a flush toilet in here we have the separate urine diverting toilet number two is to kind of prevent all this stuff from going down into your sink tank make sure

that you get a drain that has a removable basket like this that can catch anything food particles before it goes down into your tank again this is going to help prevent smells and nastiness down on the line number three is making sure you get van life friendly dish wear make sure that you're not

putting anything in your van that's number one very heavy and number two breakable that's a no no in vanline so let me show you what we have in this cabinet these are favorite ways to organize bowls and dishes we have these nice little stacking nesting plates that then keep everything organized in your

cabinet I'll link not only these but the plates and bowls that we use as well we recommend sticking with something lightweight like these or you could do enamel wear but stay away from ceramic or anything that could actually break inside your van number four is right next to our dishes and bowls and it is

this awesome little Lazy Susan it's full of snacks for our two kids it makes it super easy to find stuff and we usually stack that thing full of stuff so it makes a very functional storage solution for a small upper cabinet now number five five moving to the next cabinet I absolutely love having this stacking

shelf it allows you to put snacks all the way underneath and still on top barely even full right now but this kind of doubles our square footage here in this upper super functional and lets us fit a lot into a small space now not only is it important to organize inside your cabinets because you're working

with such a small space but it's important to make sure that everything in your cabinets are secure so on our upper cabinets we use these Mac magnetic latches and the other part is on the front of the upper on the back side and that way when you're driving nothing is going to come flying out of your

cabinets and it keeps it all organized inside not only that but we have these nice gas struts so again I will link all of these things down below but number five is making sure that you keep everything secured inside with latches now let's talk about number six inside our closet we have this amazing

storage container we thought about building in storage but then we decided having the functionality of being able to remove this entire unit was way better because if we wanted to shove something bigger in here it gives us that flexibility that we could take it out so this is all about optimizing

storage and each one of us gets one of these and they do pull out which is just very very functional and now number seven let's talk about how we secure this door you'll hear it close it's not a magnetic latch on any doors and drawers this is what we use we use this is half of it and the other half

has this nice ball latch on it these are adjustable so you can increase the tension if it's like a really heavy drawer so that these balls move closer together and that way if you have anything really heavy in a cabinet or a drawer you're going to make sure it's nice and tight and secured and not going

to fly open when you're driving so number eight is this mirror it's actually not a mirror it is an acrylic material so it's never going to break or shatter or anything like that I can stand here get ready in the morning and write in the kitchen I have an outlet here so that I can plug in my curling

iron and stand here and still do my hair every day now let's talk about what's under our kitchen sink I think you can really maximize storage underneath the sink and give you a lot of options down there it is kind of like a utility area so number nine is this aming amazing pullout trash can we've used this one

and another one in the past I'll link both of them down below these are two favorites that typically fit in a kitchen that's only about 18 to 19 in deep because this is a less deep kitchen cabinet than a house you want to make sure that you're getting the right size polar trash can this just makes it super

convenient to have a place to store your trash now under our sink is a small space and the trash can takes up quite a bit of that but number 10 you got to have your cleaning solution so we have this nice portable vacuum we installed a 110 outlet underneath our kitchen sink so this can plug in and sit on its base

and be charged anytime we want to use it and this is just a really good size to fit in that same small space underneath the sink now I think we saved the best for last number 11 are these car seats these are a complete Game Changer if you have kids or grandkids that are going to be traveling with you you might know how

bulky car seats are how heavy they are how inconvenient they are these actually fold up and fit into a backpack so when we get somewhere and we're hanging out at a campsite for an entire weekend we can actually take these out and actually have this seat for hangout lounge space our seat actually swivels around so then

we can kind of open up this whole section and it gives us so much more flexibility again these are such a game Cher they're super lightweight easy to install and they fold up and fit into a backpack so even if you're going to travel by airplane and you know you need to take a car seat with you definitely

check these out they are a huge plus so hopefully you enjoyed this video 11 Amazon products that are huge for Van lifers this will help you organize your space and really optimize your space and keep it nice and clean so if you like this give it a thumbs up let me know if there's any other favorite products of

yours that you feel like are really important for Van life leave them in the comments below and we'll see you guys next time bye
