Overview of This Sydney Helicopter Doors-Off Experience

This video follows vlogger Brian and two friends as they take a 30-minute open-doors helicopter flight over Sydney with Blue Sky Helicopters. The experience captures unobstructed aerial views of some of Australia's most iconic landmarks, from Bondi Beach to the Sydney Opera House, offering a rare perspective on the city that drone flying cannot provide (drone flights over Sydney Harbour are illegal due to helicopter and plane traffic). The route departs from Sydney International Airport, sweeps past northern beaches including Manly, circles Sydney Harbour, and returns to base—all filmed entirely on a smartphone for authenticity.

This experience suits adventurous travelers who want to see Sydney from the air without the hassle of planning a separate sightseeing itinerary, photography enthusiasts looking to capture iconic views, and anyone willing to embrace the thrill of an open-doors flight. Whether you're on a working holiday, a short visit, or a bucket-list adventure, this tour delivers a personal, intimate take on one of the world's most photographed harbours.

What to Know Before Booking Your Sydney Helicopter Flight

  • Duration and Cost: The flight lasts 30 minutes; the video shows pricing of $227 AUD per person under Blue Sky Helicopters' "Buy Two, Fly Three" promotional deal at the time of filming
  • Camera Policy: Cell phones are approved for photography and video; professional DSLR or mirrorless cameras can be brought on other package tiers (mentioned as costing around $600–$700 AUD) but require securing straps
  • Physical Setup: Doors are completely removed, so dress warmly and expect wind noise and air movement; no protective barriers between you and the sky
  • Location and Access: Tours depart from Sydney International Airport (Mascot); public transport (train or ferry) gets you to nearby stops with a short walk to the helipad

Frequently Asked Questions About This Sydney Helicopter Tour

Is a helicopter tour review like this one worth the money?

According to the video, yes—Brian states he found the 30-minute experience "completely worth it" for $227 per person under the promotional rate. He emphasizes that it's a solid first-time helicopter experience, though the pricing can vary depending on the package and season you book.

Can I bring my own professional camera on this flight?

Yes. Blue Sky Helicopters offers packages where you can bring your own DSLR or mirrorless camera, though you'll need to wear a securing strap. The video mentions these premium packages cost around $600–$700 AUD, higher than the phone-only experience shown, making it an option only if professional photography is your priority.

What happens if I'm nervous about flying with the doors off?

The video does not address fear or anxiety management, so contact Blue Sky Helicopters directly before booking to discuss your concerns. The crew can likely provide reassurance and safety information specific to first-time flyers in open-door configurations.

How do I get to the helipad from the city?

The video shows Brian taking the ferry from Manly to Mascot, then the train to the domestic airport stop—a walk of about 11 minutes to the helipad from there. Public transport is convenient; the trip is quick and affordable compared to the helicopter experience itself.

What should I wear for an open-doors flight?

The video does not explicitly mention dress code, but flying with doors off means wind exposure and lower temperatures at altitude. Dress warmly in layers and avoid loose clothing or accessories that could fly away; secure your phone or camera with a wrist strap.
