Overview of This Doors-Off Helicopter Tour Over Kauai

This video documents a doors-off helicopter tour with Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours, departing from Lihue Airport on the island of Kauai. The flight showcases some of Hawaii's most dramatic landscapes—from the emerald cliffs of Na Pali to hidden waterfalls and the wet volcanic valleys of Mount Wai'ale'ale. The operator offers a photographer-focused itinerary specifically designed to maximize camera angles and eliminate window reflections, making it ideal for anyone serious about capturing aerial images or simply wanting an unobstructed view of the island's most remote scenery.

This experience suits adventurous travelers who want to see Kauai from a perspective impossible to access from the ground, particularly those willing to embrace the exposed, weather-dependent conditions that come with an open-door flight. It's a bucket-list activity for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a memorable way to experience Hawaii's scale and beauty in a single flight.

Key Sights and Moments on the Route

  • Waimea Canyon—the dramatic "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," where the flight begins its journey inland
  • Waipo'o Falls—an 800-foot waterfall visible from the air, one of many cascades across the island only fully appreciated from above
  • Na Pali Coast—a 27-kilometer stretch of jagged emerald cliffs and sculpted mountain peaks on Kauai's north shore, considered the most beautiful part of the Hawaiian islands
  • The "Crying Wall" in Hanalei Valley—a nearly vertical rock face with approximately twenty waterfalls flowing down it simultaneously
  • Mount Wai'ale'ale volcanic valley—one of the wettest locations on Earth, where the flight dips among clouds and heavy rain

What to Expect Before and During Your Flight

  • The doors-off design removes any window barriers, providing unfiltered views and better light for photography, but also exposes you fully to wind, cold, and moisture
  • The route covers Waimea Canyon, multiple waterfalls, the Na Pali Coast, and the wet Hanalei Valley and Mount Wai'ale'ale area—a comprehensive tour of Kauai's most dramatic regions
  • Weather conditions, particularly in the Hanalei and volcanic areas, can be rainy and windy; the video shows the flight ascending and descending through actual cloud cover
  • Special photographer itineraries are available and position you for optimal shooting angles compared to standard tours
  • Book in advance, as helicopter tour spots fill quickly, especially during peak travel seasons
  • Wear layers and be prepared for cold, wet conditions at higher altitudes and near waterfalls and rain-heavy valleys

Frequently Asked Questions About Kauai Helicopter Tours

Is a doors-off helicopter tour safe?

Yes, doors-off tours are conducted by professional, experienced pilots following strict safety protocols. The video features a praised pilot from Mauna Loa, and participants are secured with harnesses. The open design is intentional and controlled, not a structural failure.

What is the Na Pali Coast, and why is it special?

Na Pali means "the cliffs" in Hawaiian. It's a 27-kilometer stretch of soaring, verdant cliffs and jagged mountain peaks on Kauai's north shore. The video describes it as the most beautiful part of the Hawaiian islands, and it's largely inaccessible except by helicopter, boat, or a long hiking trail.

Can I take good photos with a doors-off helicopter tour?

Absolutely—in fact, it's ideal for photography. The absence of windows eliminates reflections and glare that typically plague aerial shots. Mauna Loa offers photographer-specific itineraries designed around the best vantage points for stills and video. Many serious photographers book this format for that reason.

What should I wear on the tour?

Dress in layers. You'll encounter cold, wind, and moisture—especially in the Hanalei Valley and near Mount Wai'ale'ale, where rain is frequent and heavy. The video shows participants exposed to rain and mist during the flight's latter stages.

Where do the tours depart from?

The video's flight departs from Lihue Airport on Kauai, the main hub for helicopter tours on the island.

Justin’s Take

This video is invaluable for anyone considering a helicopter tour review before booking. It shows real conditions—the clouds, rain, and scale of the waterfalls—without overselling the experience, and provides specific route details and company information so you know exactly what to expect.

What stands out is the honest portrayal of weather and the focus on actual sights with real distances and names, plus the filmmaker's clear passion for both the experience and the place. If you're torn between ground-based and aerial tours of Kauai, this will make your decision easy—and likely convince you to book sooner rather than later.

Description

We’ve experienced the breathtaking ‘Doors Off Helicopter tour’ in Kauai with Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours !
It's seriously A MUST DO on your Hawaiian bucket list ! See the beauty of the Na Pali coast from above, among the clouds !
