What This Kauai Helicopter Tour Actually Offers

A helicopter tour review that shows you what a doors-off aerial flight around Kauai's hidden landscape really looks like. The video follows two travelers who've lived on the island for months but had never seen it from the air until taking a $700 helicopter tour. They fly over terrain that's completely inaccessible by road—about 85% of Kauai cannot be reached on foot or car—revealing waterfalls, remote cliffs, and hidden canyon systems that ground-level visitors never see.

This experience suits travelers who've already explored Kauai's main attractions (hiking, snorkeling, beaches) and want a singular, perspective-shifting moment. It's also ideal for those whose time on the island is limited and want to see the full geography without spending weeks trekking. The video makes clear this isn't budget travel—it's a splurge—but the footage shows why locals and repeat visitors say it's worth the cost.

  • Mount Waialeale waterfalls—rare, secluded falls that only appear during rainstorms, flowing visibly during the flight

  • Rain and cloud formations—flying through active weather near Mount Waialeale, one of Earth's wettest spots

Essential Details Before Booking a Kauai Helicopter Tour

  • Cost: Expect to pay around $700 per person for a full-island tour
  • Doors-off option: Many tours offer the choice to fly without doors for unobstructed photography and views; this is available but not mandatory
  • Weather-dependent routing: Pilots may adjust the route based on cloud cover and rain; the video crew's pilot diverted to fly through clouds near Na Pali when conditions allowed
  • Safety briefing: You'll receive a pre-flight safety orientation from the pilot before departure
  • Book in advance: Tours fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons; spots are limited
  • Ground coverage: This tour covers terrain entirely inaccessible from the road, so it's the only way to see about 85% of the island's landscape
  • What to bring: The video suggests you'll want a good camera or GoPro to capture the experience, given how visually stunning the route is

Common Questions About Kauai Helicopter Tours

Is a $700 helicopter tour worth it if Kauai has free adventures?

According to the video, yes—but only if you want to see the entire island's geography. Kauai has plenty of free or cheap hikes, beaches, and water activities, but roughly 85% of the island is completely inaccessible by road or foot. If you've already done the main attractions and want a transformative, different-perspective experience, the helicopter tour answers a specific question that no ground-level activity can.

What's the difference between a doors-on and doors-off helicopter tour?

The video shows a doors-off tour, where the aircraft doors are removed entirely. This gives unobstructed 360-degree views and better camera angles, but also means you're exposed to wind and altitude. The pilot will brief you on safety before departure. Doors-on tours keep the doors attached but still offer window views; they're typically calmer if you're nervous about heights.

How long does a typical Kauai helicopter tour last?

The video doesn't specify the exact duration of the flight, but from the footage, it appears to cover a full loop of the island's major features—Waimea Canyon, Na Pali Coast, Mount Waialeale, and the Hanalei area—suggesting a tour of roughly 45–60 minutes in the air. You should ask your tour operator for the exact time when booking.

What if the weather is bad on the day of my tour?

The video shows that pilots are flexible with routing based on conditions. The crew's flight encountered rain and clouds, and the pilot adjusted course to fly through them near Mount Waialeale to show the rare waterfalls that only flow during storms. However, if weather is severe enough to make flying unsafe, tours can be rescheduled. Always confirm cancellation and rescheduling policies when you book.

Can you really see everything in one helicopter tour?

The video's crew had lived on Kauai for months and hiked extensively before taking the helicopter tour. From the air, they saw landscapes they'd never encountered on the ground—hidden canyons, remote waterfalls, and the full scale of places like Na Pali and Waimea that are much smaller or less impressive from road level. One tour won't make you an expert on Kauai, but it will show you views and places that simply cannot be seen any other way.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely useful because it shows real footage of a $700 experience from inside the helicopter, not just marketing shots. The crew are honest about the cost and ask the hard question upfront: why spend this much when Kauai has free adventures? Their answer—that 85% of the island is inaccessible any other way—is the clearest justification I've heard.

What stands out most is how emotional the moment becomes. These travelers had lived on the island for months, but seeing it from the air changed their entire relationship to the place. If you're a serious traveler who wants to truly see a destination, this is the tour to book.

▬ About Us! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
We’re Blake and Eli, full-time nomads for the past three years! After meeting in 2021 while in Hawaii, we decided to completely change our lives to be together. We both worked 9-5 remotely, and knew very early on that we did not want to do that forever. So, while looking for new adventures we found a campervan in Hawaii, bought it sight unseen and fixed it up while living in it! Now we rent it out and use the income to fund some of our travels. In 2022, we began by traveling to Australia on a one way ticket! Now we love sharing all our crazy adventures on Youtube! (we are definitely huge adrenaline junkies!) And show you how you can afford to travel more!

quite like any Hawaiian island is an expensive place to visit after a flight place to stay and a rental car a week can cost thousands of dollars but Kauai also is an Island full of Adventure that is free so why would you ever spend seven hundred dollars on this

[Music] foreign so for as long as we've been living in Kauai we get asked by tourists by locals by everybody if we've done the helicopter tour yet we have not Spurs and done the helicopter tour until today I actually got it for Ellie for our one year anniversary having met actually on

this island so this is a huge moment for us and we're so excited in the time that we've lived here we've literally done everything on the island we've hiked the callalabout trail we've done the Nepali boat cruise we've done tons of Waimea hiking we've surfed the Hanalei Bay but this is the one thing we haven't done

Kauai isn't exactly easy to fully explore you can follow the main road to explore the edge of the island but most of Kauai is not accessible at all this means that if you want to truly see all of Kauai you have to do it in a helicopter after all this time I literally cannot believe that we're about to get on this

little guy right here it's literally right there like I'm so excited we haven't done this and we've been dreaming of doing this for so long this man just came over here and grabbed a door but we're not going to be needing these doors today is doors off the move I don't know so quad is the best then for

the twice back oh we know yeah yeah our pilot assured our safety before pointing where the door usually goes foreign

Kauai has incredibly diverse Landscapes we crossed the Ridgeline and everything would change the Jurassic Park views dropped we were flying into a massive Canyon welcome to Waimea the Grand Canyon of the Pacific is known for its beautiful red Canyon walls as well as its waterfalls

at this point we were only minutes away from the most legendary part of this beautiful Island through our headset we heard our proud saying something about a diversion because the clouds [Music] we didn't realize that he was planning to fly right through them it was a surreal moment when the clouds parted we

realized where we were we made it to Colorado [Music] after our first flyby we Dove down closer into the Ridgeline to better feel the scale of these massive Cliffs

foreign [Music] Beach we could point to where we camped just a few months prior this is when it started to sink in just how special it was to be here there's a few times in life where one experience can change your entire view

on the place as Travelers we dream of these moments to see things differently and we had never seen Kawaii quite like this before foreign [Music] Inland the rain and wind picked up as we near Mount waialayale one of the wettest places on Earth flying through the rain clouds was awesome the bumpy ride was

worth it as we came across some of the most rare and secluded waterfalls on the island only flowing during an active rainstorm like now in many ways Kauai was giving us a beautiful and Bittersweet send-off seeing all of her beauty like this meant everything to us [Music]

thank you that was epic all right so now final thoughts as a local would we recommend going on a helicopter tour I'm not we haven't said anything yet so I'm gonna say on one two three we're gonna start in sorry ready one two three absolutely and this is actually one of our last days here on Kauai so this is one of the

last Adventures that we're gonna have in our beautiful Hawaiian home we're heading somewhere new next week a whole new country so make sure to subscribe and so you don't miss that and we'll see you next time on today's adventure bye foreign
