What to Expect From This Big Island Helicopter Volcano Tour

This helicopter tour review captures a scenic flight departing from Hilo on Hawaii's Big Island, where a pilot and crew take passengers over some of the island's most dramatic geological features. The video follows a traveler and their grandmother as they experience the landscape from the air, spotting active volcanoes, layered evidence of past eruptions, and the agricultural terrain that surrounds these natural wonders. The tour operates at a price point described as only a couple hundred dollars, making it accessible for a range of budgets while delivering views most visitors can only dream about.

This experience suits anyone drawn to geology, natural landscapes, or simply unforgettable aerial perspectives—whether you're a first-time Big Island visitor or returning to see the island from a new angle. Multi-generational groups, as shown in the video, tend to thrive on this kind of tour, since the views don't require physical exertion and everyone gets an equal seat in the sky. If you've ever wanted to see a real volcano from above, or understand the island's volcanic history etched into its terrain, this tour delivers that perspective in one flight.

Highlights You'll See on the Flight

  • Active volcanoes viewed from directly above, showing the scale and power of the island's ongoing geological activity
  • Cinder cones scattered across the landscape, revealing the history of past volcanic events
  • Multiple layers of lava flows from different years, visible as distinct patterns and colors on the ground
  • Macadamia nut farms, showing how local agriculture thrives on the volcanic soil
  • The varied terrain of the Big Island from a vantage point impossible to achieve from ground level

Practical Details Before You Book Your Flight

  • Flights depart from Hilo, on the eastern side of the Big Island—factor in drive time if you're staying elsewhere on the island
  • Cost runs into the low hundreds of dollars, making it a meaningful but not extravagant investment for a scenic flight
  • The crew and pilot are described as professional and welcoming, contributing to a positive experience
  • Spots can fill up, especially during peak travel seasons, so booking in advance is wise
  • Bring a camera or phone ready to capture images—the aerial views are the main attraction
  • Dress in layers; helicopter cabins can be cool, but you'll want flexibility for ground-level temperatures before and after

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely useful because it shows a real, unscripted tour experience rather than a slick promotional clip. You see the actual views from inside the helicopter, hear the crew's knowledge, and watch how the tour flows for real passengers of different ages and backgrounds. The presenter's honest reaction—calling it "awesome" and recommending it—carries more weight than a polished advertisement ever could.

What stands out most is the intergenerational angle; seeing a grandmother and grandchild share the experience together reminds you that this isn't just for thrill-seekers or hardcore nature enthusiasts. The focus on geological features—volcanoes, cinder cones, lava flows—gives you concrete reasons to book beyond just "it's a cool flight," and the casual mention of price makes it feel attainable. If you're on the Big Island and considering a best helicopter tour, this video will help you decide whether it fits your style and priorities.
