What a Day in the Life of a Maui Helicopter Pilot Reveals

This video follows Jake Harmon, chief pilot at Maverick Helicopters, through a full workday on Maui—from the 6 a.m. office routine through five consecutive helicopter tours. It's an insider's look at what operating a professional aerial tour service actually involves: weather checks, aircraft maintenance logs, pre-flight inspections, and the constant coordination needed to keep guests safe and entertained. If you're considering a helicopter tour review before booking your own flight, seeing a working pilot's perspective on preparation and professionalism offers valuable reassurance.

The video showcases three distinct tour routes departing from Kahului Heliport: the Molokai Voyage (circling West Maui and Molokai), the Hana Rainforest experience (with an actual landing in the rainforest), and the Maui Dream (an island-wide circuit including a 10,000-foot volcano pass and waterfall views). This experience suits adventurous travelers who want aerial scenery without the multi-hour commitment of a full-day excursion, as well as visitors curious about Hawaiian geography, culture, and wildlife.

Common Questions About Maui Helicopter Tours with Maverick

How many flights does a Maverick pilot fly in a single day?

According to the video, pilots typically fly 3 to 4 tours per day, though Jake's workday shown in the video included 5 flights. The exact number depends on the schedule and tour demand.

What happens between flights?

The aircraft must be completely turned around: fueled, windows cleaned, headsets sanitized, life jackets folded, and the interior refreshed. Pilots may grab a quick meal during this window. At day's end, the aircraft is washed thoroughly to prevent salt-water corrosion.

Do the tours include guided commentary about Hawaii?

Yes. Pilots are responsible for sharing knowledgeable information about Hawaiian island history and culture during the flight. The video shows Jake explaining different types of ginger and local plants during the rainforest landing tour.

Can you actually land on some tours?

Yes. The Hana Rainforest experience includes a 30-minute landing in the rainforest where guests can see plants and wildlife up close and receive guided information from the pilot.

Why do the helicopters need to be washed every day?

Because Kahului Heliport is located near the ocean, salt water and corrosive sea air take a significant toll on the aircraft. Daily washing keeps the helicopters in optimal condition and extends their lifespan.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it removes the mystery around helicopter tour operations. Many travelers feel nervous about safety or uncertain whether a tour is worth the cost, and seeing a professional pilot's detailed focus on maintenance, weather monitoring, and aircraft turnover builds confidence in the company's standards. You understand that these flights aren't improvised adventures—they're carefully choreographed operations run by experienced people who care about both safety and guest experience.

What impressed me most was watching the pilot explain his pre-flight checklist and then later teach guests about Hawaiian flora during the rainforest landing. It's clear that Maverick pilots see themselves as educators and stewards of the experience, not just drivers. If you're on the fence about booking a best helicopter tour, this honest, behind-the-scenes perspective will help you decide confidently.

[Music] hey guys my name is Jake Harmon I'm the chief pilot of Maverick helicopters here in Hawaii I've been flying almost 19 years and I'm going to show you what it's like for a day in the life of a Maverick helicopter pilot [Music]

so when we first get to work it's about 6 a.m I come in here I open up my laptop and I'm going to check all the stuff that I need to check that's pertinent for the flights for that day so that's weather aircraft availability any maintenance issues that we need to address and what pilots are on the

schedule so we come up here in the office we check all those things we check weather and then we go down into the hangar grab the maintenance log books and then we'll head out to the aircraft and do our pre-flight inspections foreign so I have five flights today the first one's going to be a Molokai Voyage which

goes around West Maui and Molokai it's going to be a long day today super Stokes [Music] [Music]

foreign [Music] we just got done with our first flight over to Molokai next we're going to go out on a Honda rainforest experience tour in between flights here we get the aircraft turned around we clean the headsets fold up the life jackets get all the windows clean maybe grab a bite

to eat and then we'll head out again really quick [Music] foreign [Music]

foreign [Music] guys we're heading out on flight number three getting up here to check my manifest that tells us you know who we're flying with what the weights are and everything and then uh we head out I think this time I'm going to Molokai again [Music]

when you're planning a trip to Maverick to come on a helicopter ride with us some things to remember you want to book in advance our helicopters fill up fast you don't want to get to Hawaii only to find out that there isn't any room available for you so I would suggest booking in advance once you've made that

booking and you get here some things to arrive with are sunglasses maybe a bottle of water a collared shirt helps to keep the seat belts off your neck that's kind of nice one other bonus tip when you're flying with us it's nice to wear dark clothing there's a lot of sun and can be a lot of glare in the

helicopters so it makes the pictures turn out a lot nicer those would be some good recommendations that'll make your flight just perfect [Music] foreign [Music]

so when we're turning around the aircraft in between flights we want to get it prepped and ready for the next set of guests that's coming we want to get fuel in it we want to clean the windows fold up the life jackets clean all the headsets in the interior make it look really nice for the experience for

the next folks so our next flight here our fourth Flight of the day is called the Maui dream we're gonna head pretty much around the entire island of Maui we're going to go up to the top of the volcano up at 10 000 feet come around the haunted rainforest and then go out to the West Valley mountains and see

some really cool valleys and waterfalls foreign

foreign Forest experience which is a flight that takes us around the North Shore of the island and we actually land in the rainforest which is super cool we're out there for like 30 minutes chatting checking out the plants and all the wildlife and everything out there and then we come back and head back to

Kahului so looking forward to it [Music]

foreign [Music] there's ten thousand types of ginger in the world so a lot of different ones and you can kind of tell Ginger because the

stalks and the leaves all look the same and this is a type called pink Ginger pink flowers and if you guys smell this but when you squeeze it like this it smells like fruit loop cereal [Music] oh my God [Music]

foreign just got done with all my flights today five flights today and one of the things we do in Hawaii is we have to wash each of these aircraft completely at the end of the day and that's because we're right next to the ocean and salt water and the corrosive things that go along

with that take a toll on these aircraft so we want to keep them in Tip-Top shape so once again guys my name is Jay Carman Chief pilot at Maverick Hawaii thanks for joining me on a day in the life and looking forward to seeing you guys next time aloha [Music]
