Overview: Flying Without Doors Over Kauai's Stunning Landscape

The 7Wayfinders family tried something most travelers never experience: a doors-off helicopter tour of Kauai. In the video, they fly in a small, intimate aircraft—described as looking like "a tissue box with a propeller"—that seats roughly ten people. The open-air design means nothing between you and the 360-degree views, only a standard seat belt holding you in. This isn't your typical enclosed helicopter tour; it's raw, immersive, and designed for travelers who want to feel the wind and rain while witnessing Kauai's most dramatic terrain from above.

This experience suits adventure-hungry travelers willing to step outside their comfort zone, families looking for unforgettable memories, and anyone visiting Hawaii who wants to see the entire island—including spots completely unreachable from the ground. The family's genuine emotional reaction (Leslie actually cried during the flight) speaks to how profound this perspective can be. If you've ever wondered what it would feel like to truly fly rather than simply ride in an aircraft, this doors-off option delivers exactly that sensation.

Key Moments

Highlights: What You'll See on This Kauai Helicopter Tour

  • Waimea Canyon—the dramatic red-and-orange striped canyon visible only fully from the air
  • Napali Coast with its inaccessible waterfalls—the helicopter flies all the way to the back where constant rain feeds a hidden waterfall
  • Waili'ili Crater, one of Kauai's iconic volcanic formations
  • 360-degree island views covering nearly the entire island in a single flight
  • Sensory immersion—you feel the wind, the rain, and experience genuine weightlessness that Leslie describes as "literally flying"

What to Know Before Booking Your Doors-Off Flight

  • Aircraft size and restraint system: The small yellow helicopter holds roughly ten passengers. Expect a standard seat belt rather than a multi-point harness, which the family found "a little nerve-wrecking" at first
  • Weather conditions: Rain is constant at many spots, especially near waterfalls and the coast; bring a secure camera if you want photos, as the wind and moisture are very real
  • Physical demands: The flight is intense and emotionally overwhelming for some travelers; the family notes it was "way more intense than anticipated"
  • Booking urgency: Helicopter tour availability fills quickly, especially for doors-off options. Book as soon as your travel dates are set
  • Cost perspective: The family emphasizes this is a premium experience they'd never been able to afford before; plan accordingly in your budget

Frequently Asked Questions About This Kauai Doors-Off Experience

How long is the flight?

The video does not specify the exact duration of the tour, though it covers the entire island and includes stops at multiple major landmarks (Waimea Canyon, Napali Coast, the waterfall, and Waili'ili Crater), suggesting a flight of at least 45 minutes to an hour.

Is it safe to fly with no doors?

The aircraft is a professional tour helicopter worth 3–4 million dollars, flown by experienced pilots trained for doors-off operations. Passengers are secured with seat belts. The family confirms the safety features, though they note the standard belt felt different from what they initially expected (a multi-point harness).

What should I wear?

The video emphasizes rain and wind are constant elements, particularly near waterfalls and the Napali Coast. Wear layers you can manage in an open aircraft, secure any loose items, and avoid anything you can't afford to lose to the wind.

Will I get cold or wet?

Yes to both. The video explicitly shows rain falling on passengers and mentions the constant wind. The family felt "the wind, the rain" throughout the flight, so prepare for genuine weather exposure rather than a sheltered ride.

Is this tour worth the cost?

The family describes it as one of the best experiences they've had in five years of full-time family travel. Leslie says she has "no words to describe the experience" and cried from emotion. Chris calls it "breathtaking." Both parents agree it's a once-in-a-lifetime perspective that justifies the investment.

Justin’s Take

This video is invaluable if you're deciding whether a doors-off helicopter tour is for you. The family doesn't sugarcoat the intensity or the equipment differences from what they expected, but they also make clear why the investment in this particular experience matters. They show real fear, real wonder, and real emotion—not a sales pitch.

What stands out most is Leslie and Chris's honesty about affordability and the rarity of this experience in their lives. They don't pretend it's casual or easy; they celebrate it as extraordinary. If you're considering a best helicopter tour and wondering whether to splurge on the doors-off option, this video gives you the genuine answer. Absolutely book it.

what you doing great thank you nearly we're a family of seven who decided to travel the world one month at a time Chris Leslie Lucy Grant Lincoln Harrison and grace now were the seven wayfinders I was only travel I guys wanted to talk

to you about our helicopter right in Kauai coming to Hawaii and not doing a helicopter tour is like going to the Sistine Chapel and not looking up polity reset my heart tree nothing in my

heart we found out that there's a doors off option hang on we've got a kid coming over Wow great let's you see these big beautiful blue Hawaiian helicopters that are worth like 3 or 4 million dollars they fit like 10 people and then you see this little tiny yellow one that kind of

looks like a little tissue box with a propeller and you're like oh that's that one's mine that one right max so it's a little more rustic we were told we'd have like a six or five point harness we had just a regular fee belt which was a little nerve wrecking it was so cool tell me

hold on to the street we can make you still leave me you get to see pretty much the entire island you see all of the really big attractions you get to go to Waimea Canyon wali Ollie Crater we got to see of course the Napali Coast which just can't be beat we got to fly all the way in and see the waterfall at

the back it's just constantly raining there it's so wet tell me you don't believe me hold on to the trees we can make it [Music] is the meat [Music]

are you gonna waste my time and you see I do anything [Music] you know it was just amazing I really don't have words to describe the experience I was so overcome with emotion that I cried a

couple of times just seeing the natural beauty of Hawaii and being able to see it from the perspective that you could never imagine was way more intense than I anticipated I don't know why it's not one of the seven wonders of the world because it is for me it was breathtaking [Music]

I really thought it was neat that neither Chris and I have ever been and that we've never been able to afford one so because of that we truly appreciated this experience I think we'll introduce our kids to a lot of experiences especially on this trip and they'll do still do way more than many people get

to experience in their childhoods but that's one that they're gonna have to do themselves [Music]
