Overview of This Doors-Off Helicopter Tour Over Kauai

This video follows Gracie O'Connor on her first-ever helicopter experience—specifically a doors-off tour over Kauai, Hawaii. Shot on her last day exploring the island's north shore, the vlog captures the full journey from early-morning check-in through the 25-minute scenic flight and lunch in Poipu. The tour operator uses a two-seater helicopter with guaranteed outside seats for both passengers, ensuring unobstructed views of the island's coastline and landscape.

The experience suits adventurous travelers who prioritize scenery and photography over comfort, and who are willing to spend on a premium activity. If you've considered taking a helicopter tour but worried about sitting in a cramped middle seat with limited views, or if you want to see Kauai's geography from an entirely new perspective, this video shows exactly what a doors-off tour delivers and whether it matches your travel style.

What You Need to Know Before Booking a Kauai Helicopter Tour

  • Duration: Total flight time is 25 minutes—10 minutes over water, 15 minutes over land
  • Booking timeline: Check-in is 45 minutes before departure; the video departs at 9:45 a.m., requiring a 7:15 a.m. wake-up and early checkout
  • Dress code: Tour operator recommends wearing black to reduce glare, though the video notes this may be less relevant for doors-off seating
  • Safety gear: Life vests are provided and worn during flight
  • Company selection: The video specifically chose this operator because smaller helicopters guarantee outside seats rather than assigning middle seating that blocks views; larger companies charge similar prices but offer no such guarantee
  • Cost: Described as a "splurge" but presented as worth the investment for scenic destinations
  • Flexibility: Hawaiian Airlines offered no change fees, allowing last-minute flight rescheduling if needed

Frequently Asked Questions About Doors-Off Helicopter Tours in Kauai

What's the difference between a doors-off tour and a standard helicopter tour?

A doors-off tour removes the aircraft's doors entirely, giving you an unobstructed 360-degree view and unimpeded camera angles. The video's operator specifically uses a two-seater helicopter to guarantee each passenger an outside seat with a door gone. Standard tours use larger helicopters with windows and often assign middle seats where your view is blocked by other passengers, despite charging similar prices.

Is a doors-off helicopter tour safe?

Yes—the video shows all passengers wearing life vests before takeoff. The tour operator includes safety briefing and equipment as standard. The vlogger, flying for the first time, expresses gratitude for the opportunity but does not voice safety concerns; the operation appears routine and professional.

What will I see on the Kauai helicopter tour?

You'll see 10 minutes of Kauai's coastline and ocean views, then 15 minutes of the island's inland terrain. The video mentions views of Wailua Canyon from the air as a highlight. The exact sights depend on flight path and weather, but the tour covers both the island's water edges and its elevated interior landscape.

How early do I need to arrive for a helicopter tour in Kauai?

Plan to arrive 45 minutes before your departure time. The video's 9:45 a.m. tour required check-in by 9:00 a.m., which influenced the early 7:15 a.m. wake-up and hotel checkout timing.

Can I bring a camera on a doors-off helicopter tour?

Yes. The video shows the vlogger bringing a camera to film during the flight (her phone was stowed for safety, but the camera was permitted). Doors-off seating actually gives better camera angles than standard tours, since there's no windshield or window glare to shoot through.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it shows the full booking-to-flight-to-landing cycle on a first-ever helicopter ride, so nervous flyers get an honest sense of pacing, timing, and what the ride feels like. You also see a direct comparison between tour operators and learn exactly why this one was chosen over others—practical decision-making that saves you research time.

I loved watching the immediate post-flight moment where the vlogger rates it 10 out of 10 and reflects that doors-off flying gives you "the world from a whole new perspective"—that genuine enthusiasm carries through, and her advice to splurge on scenic activities like this one is solid. If you're considering a helicopter tour anywhere scenic, this is absolutely worth watching before you book.

good morning everybody it is our last day in Kawai Hawaii before we fly back to Honolulu for our last week living in Hawaii I can't even believe that I'm saying that the month has pretty much flown by oh my goodness and I forgot that I ran the dishwasher in here let me come over in here so that I can just

chat with you guys a bit tell you what's going on today and oh my gosh how cute is this lamp Okay anyway I'm going just chat with you let you know what the plan is for our last day in chai we have a 9:45 a.m. h opter tour we chose a doors off helicopter tour I will leave the tour provider information in the

description Down Below in case you guys want to go if you're going to kaai or just want to check it out we decided to do doors off not only have I never been in a helicopter but I've never been in a doors off helicopter Austin has been in a helicopter but not doors off so we're very excited we heard that that's the

best way to see Kawai and that is what we're doing to start off our morning we are currently 50 minutes from the airport and you have to check in 45 minutes early so it was a little bit of an earlier wakeup call this morning at 7:15 but we are dressed and ready to go they recommend you to wear black so that

you're not so reflective although with doors off I'm not really sure how that's going to be different but this is what I'm wearing I also have a sweatshirt it's not black though it's pink so maybe the black is just whatever at this point but we are both dressed in all black for this and then after that we're going to

see what the day takes us we were going to do this sugar Plantation tubing that so many of you guys recommended to me on my Instagram story so thank you for that but unfortunately the only time that they had when I had checked was a one in the afternoon that they could accommodate two people for and it was

too late to where we needed to be at the airport by the time we'd be getting off of the tubes and the only other time was 10:00 a.m. and we're going to be on our helicopter tour so we're not able to do that we think we might go to Wanga State Canyon Park because that's another huge

thing not necessarily to hike but to do the lookout points and maybe walk over to the Red Dirt waterfall that's a huge thing and I want to explore the Poo area of Kawai cuz we're not on that side we are up on the North side in Princeville Han a bay area so if you know anything about Kawaii they've got you know you

can imagine it like this nobody really goes to this West Side the south side has a ton of resorts the north side has a ton of resorts and the East side's where the airport is also a ton of resorts but it just depends on what you want to get out of your trip we decided to stay in the north side so we could do

beaches up here and the hike that we did yesterday which I have a vlog on which was just so special and so sweet and then we knew we were going to be in the airport area today and then after that we knew we were going to head over to the east side so for us it made the most sense to stay Princeville hanay Bay Area

but that being said we've got to get ready to go we've got two Celsius in the fridge that I'm going to grab obviously we're also checking out of this wonderful Windham Hotel we're staying at the club Windham sheer water but we're checking out and we are going to head over to the airport and hopefully on the

way there find some breakfast before we have to check in for a helicopter oh my word it is bright up but we just made it over to the airport area and we have seen so many helicopters I don't even know if you can hear them we're over here we are about to go check in we are just on time actually we arrived like

like 10 minutes early but we sat in the car I've been updating my Instagram stories but we're going to go check in see what we have to do for the next 45 minutes and get ready to get our helicopter like I said I've never done anything like this before so I'm just so excited so grateful for New

Opportunities and this is something I've been wanting to do for so long and I just can't even believe that we're doing it in Kawaii Hawaii of all places so let's just have the best last day in Kawaii together all right here we are heading in the check in hi good morning sitting there for about 15

minutes so now they're taking us in a golf cart on our way to our helicopter we just saw the people who were on before us and they said it was so much fun so I'm really excited I know the first time I ever doing this first little 5 minute trip and we are over here where the helicopter is we're on a

small one that only accommodates two people here is our helicopter I'll give you a closer look at it once we get over there but it is a smaller helicopter that accommodates just two outside seats we picked this company specifically because we wanted to guarantee that we had an outside view a lot of the other

companies charged just about the same amount of money except that you don't get a guaranteed outside seat so you could be stuck in the middle and not really be able to see anything so what we loved about this one is that it has doors off and we are both guaranteed aside to be able to look out on wow look

at this oh my goodness all right so here is our helicopter my phone is going away but I will keep out my camera and Austin has phone but as you can see it's just a two-seater back here with the doors off and our pilot is going to be up here with the front we're spending 10 minutes

over the water and 15 minutes over the land I am seriously so excited for this and we're going to get going we're all strapped in we've got our life vest on here just in case anything happens but we're getting ready oh yeah all right

[Music] yep [Music]

a [Music]

[Music] that was amazing and I will have to debrief but I'm not even kidding you when I say it's probably one of the coolest things and best things I've done ever traveling doors post helicopter tour and we need to eat we are down in po poo Beach it took us 25 minutes to get over here we're going to kyi's

Paradise I don't know it had like 3,000 reviews and 4.5 stars on Google so that is where we are we're getting lunch we decided we didn't exactly want breakfast food so we're getting lunch food and we wanted to be closer to this area of po po and WEA Canyon so we decided to head down here to eat we ended up getting a

cocktail because they were highly recommended so I got the island Martini so it's just Island flavors also we got this awesome coconut mokito that comes in a little coconut cup so cheers for last day the beets the goat cheese the kale it is like my absolute dream salad Austin got the fish and chips which look

so good we're just enjoying our little lunch here and to finish it off some coconut banana pie for dessert we've seen all kinds of crazy pies on the menus the past couple of days so we finally caved and got one and this looks amazing we had lunch we checked out the the PO Beach area and then we are

sitting there don't feel very good we actually switched our flight to go up just about an hour so we are dropping off our turo car back at this lot behind the target actually the turo van's here to take people to the airport so it just kind of ended up being perfect timing so a little bit of a bummer day we thought

we're going to go to WEA at State Canyon Park but we said after we saw amazing views of it up in the helicopter ride and the fact that it was 50 minutes from where we were and then we were going to want to spend time there and then it's an hour and a half from the airport we're only going to get like 35 minutes

there so we decided against it and we just ended up moving up our flight so thank you to Hawaiian Airlines for no change fees and we are going to get back to aaho a little bit earlier than expected but we're just exhausted and I can't kick the feelings so just grateful that we had such an amazing 3 days in

Kawaii and definitely definitely definitely we'll be back I got it we are back in the car on the way back to the apartment Austin is finishing watching the Thursday night football Steelers Titans came on his phone Steelers and we're just going to head home for the night make some food in

hang out in go to bed early with no alarm for the morning because we both discussed we're just so stink and tired and it's just one of those days where it's felt like the longest day ever and we really haven't done too much I think it's just been long weeks upon long weeks it's time to get some rest for

tomorrow we are back home in aahu it is just about 6:45 p.m. and we are so hungry so I'm going to start some dinner we decided on pasta with chicken sausage and I'm going to get that all cooked up because that is just easy peasy dinner for tonight start to make some food and I'll show you guys what it looks like do

I have some pasta ASMR for you listen to this I mixed in some mozzarella cheese with the Carbone tomato and basil sauce in this radiator shaped pasta and this is going to be our dessert with a little bit of chicken sausage that I cut small and heated in the air fryer so that is easy peasy squeezy dinner tonight but

this sound yeah is amazing dinner is served here's how I'm serving it up with a little bit of Parmesan cheese on top red pepper flakes and the chicken sausage that's Austin's here is mine and there is plenty to go around if we need seconds and or thirds we're also going to watch watch the show that we've been

watching Nurse Jackie while we eat this so we will see you guys after we eat well I guess I never ended this Vlog but this is the end of the helicopter tour day oh my goodness I'm not even kidding I don't know what it's taken me so long to get in a helicopter not only my first helicopter ride ever first doorza it was

absolutely incredible I know it is a little bit of a Splurge but it's something we both knew we wanted to do and let me tell you if you are going to splurge on something for a trip absolutely do that if it's a Scenic Place if it's somewhere that offers it you think it would be so cool wow it's

just the world from a whole new perspective and I absolutely loved every second of it I will link the company that we went with down below not sponsored or anything just in case you're curious about the one that we did because like I said it's a smaller one we each got an outside door we didn't

have to worry about sitting in the middle and missing some of the view like some of the other companies that we were looking at but overall a 10 out of 10 day it was so much fun and we absolutely loved qu I love you guys so much if you're new here make sure that you subscribe down below so you don't miss

another video and I will see you in the next one love you guys bye [Music]
