What to Expect on This Grand Canyon South Rim Aerial Adventure

This video follows Grant and Paula as they experience the Grand Canyon from two vantage points: first on foot along the iconic South Rim trail, then unexpectedly by helicopter soaring above the canyon itself. The experience captures both the ground-level majesty of one of America's most visited natural wonders and the truly rare perspective of viewing it from the air. If you've ever wondered what the Colorado River looks like winding through the canyon depths, or how those layered rock formations appear when you're floating above them, this video gives you an authentic preview of what a helicopter tour delivers.

This adventure is ideal for travelers who want to maximize their Grand Canyon time without spending days hiking into the backcountry, couples looking for a memorable shared experience, and anyone curious about whether an aerial tour justifies the investment. The video demonstrates how a helicopter tour complements rather than replaces ground exploration—you get both the intimate trail perspectives and the sweeping bird's-eye panoramas in a single visit.

Key Sights and Moments Captured During the Tour

  • The majestic scale of the South Rim trail and its panoramic vistas from ground level
  • Aerial views of the mighty Colorado River cutting through the canyon floor
  • Intricate layers of rock formations visible only from above, showing the geological depth and complexity
  • The transition from rim-level exploration to helicopter flight, capturing the sense of discovery and surprise
  • Wide-angle perspectives of the canyon's vastness that emphasize why this landscape captivates millions of visitors annually

What You Should Know Before Booking Your Own Helicopter Tour

  • Helicopter tours operate from the South Rim area and typically include views of both the river and the exposed rock strata that tell the canyon's geological story
  • Tours combine well with ground exploration—plan time for both rim-level hiking and your flight to get the complete experience
  • Helicopter seats are in high demand, especially during peak travel seasons, so booking in advance is strongly recommended
  • Clear weather is essential for both safety and photography; morning flights often offer the best light and visibility conditions
  • Wear layers and bring sun protection, as temperatures and wind conditions change significantly at elevation and in the aircraft
  • A camera or smartphone with adequate storage is essential if you want to capture the aerial views for yourself

Frequently Asked Questions About Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours

Is a helicopter tour worth the cost compared to viewing the canyon from the rim?

The video shows that a helicopter tour offers a genuinely different experience—you see perspectives of the Colorado River, rock layers, and canyon depth that simply aren't visible from ground level. Many visitors find it a once-in-a-lifetime experience that complements rather than replaces rim exploration. Whether it's worth it depends on your budget and how deeply you want to understand the canyon's scale and geology.

Can you do both the rim trail and helicopter tour in one day?

Yes, as the video demonstrates. You can spend the morning or early afternoon exploring the South Rim trail on foot, then take a helicopter tour later in the day. Just factor in travel time between the two activities and allow energy for both experiences.

What's the best time of day to take a helicopter tour?

Morning flights generally offer the clearest visibility and the best light for viewing and photography. Wind conditions tend to be calmer earlier in the day as well. The video's 4K quality suggests good lighting conditions, which you'll want to prioritize when booking your own tour.

Do you need experience or special preparation to fly in a helicopter?

No special experience is required. Helicopter tours are designed for the general public. Standard safety briefings are provided before takeoff. If you have concerns about motion sickness or claustrophobia, discuss them with the tour operator when booking.

How far in advance should I book a helicopter tour?

Tours fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Booking at least a few weeks ahead is wise. The earlier you reserve, the better your choice of dates and times, particularly if you're traveling during summer or holiday periods.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it shows you exactly what both phases of a Grand Canyon visit look like—the on-the-ground experience and the aerial one—without exaggeration or editing tricks. Grant and Paula's reaction to the surprise helicopter tour feels authentic, which helps you imagine your own experience.

What stands out most is how the video captures the sheer visual difference between the two perspectives: the intimate, layered detail you see on the rim trail versus the overwhelming scale revealed from the air. If you're deciding whether to splurge on a helicopter tour, this video will help you make an informed choice, and I'd recommend watching it before you book.

Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music]

[Music] [Music] While planning our recent trip to Sedona, Paula mentioned on several occasions that she had never visited the Grand Canyon. And as any smart husband would do, he

took the hint from his wife and included a stop at the Grand Canyon in our itinerary. The drive up from Sedona to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center is a little over 2 hours. We entered Grand Canyon National Park via the south entrance near Grand Canyon

Village and the visitor [Music] center. As I mentioned earlier in the video, Paula had never visited the Grand Canyon before. As we approached the rim of the canyon for the first time, I intentionally had the video camera running to capture her reaction. However, her reaction was not what I

expected and completely surprised me. Okay, we need to take a helicopter ride. Really? Oh my god.

Her reaction to request a helicopter ride was very surprising to me because in previous videos I've documented that Paula has a bit of an issue with heights. Although I do think you'd have to admit that it'd be hard to find a more epic place to go on a helicopter ride than the Grand Canyon.

We explored the South Rim Trail traveling west from Mather Point toward Yavapai [Music] Point. As we traveled along the south rim trail, some other park visitors told

us they had seen big horn sheep just below the [Music] rim. I quickly tried to find some vantage point in order to capture them on video. But just like the whales on our recent Alaskan cruise, these big horn sheep just simply disappeared.

[Music] But then one of the big horn sheep decided it was time to make his big YouTube debut.

While that wasn't the orca I was trying to capture on our Alaskan cruise, having a big horn sheep walk right by you at the Grand Canyon's not bad. So, due to her previously documented issue with heights, I made Paula double pinky swear that she would go on a helicopter ride if I booked

it. Even though we were visiting the Grand Canyon in November, which is not the peak season, I assumed all the helicopter ride vendors would be booked for the day. However, the very first provider I called had tours available that afternoon, so we booked them. Before we left the South Rim Trail, we

did manage to get one really great picture for the Christmas card this year. Now, it's time for Apollo to be extra brave and go on the helicopter ride. We booked our helicopter ride through Papon Grand Canyon Helicopters. And just full disclosure here, we are not sponsored by Papon Helicopters.

We're not affiliated with them in any way. We pay for this trip completely with our own money. Our flight departed from Grand Canyon National Park Airport just outside the south [Music] entrance. After a pre-flight weighin, watching a safety video, and signing all your waiverss, you are ready to go.

[Music] [Applause] The ground crew will escort you out to your Hilo. Ensure you're properly secured and you're ready to go.

The chopper slowly bags up to the departure point and off you go. [Applause] [Music]

[Applause] [Music] soon you reach the rim of the canyon. [Music] [Applause] [Music] I will not do any additional narration

during the helicopter ride. I really don't know what I could add. I'll just let the Grand Canyon speak for itself.

[Music] Heat. Heat.

[Music] Heat. Heat. Heat up

[Music] here. [Music]

Heat. Heat. [Music] And after about a 20minute flight around the Grand Canyon, you touch back down at the same [Music]

airport. And for those of you who are wondering, yes, Paula really enjoyed the flight. And as we exit the helicopter, I do want to mention our associate sponsor, [Music] dailyroppro.com. While Daily Drop Pro cannot help you find great deals on helicopter rides around the Grand Canyon, it can get you great flights,

both international and domestic, from airports that you select. The app will send you deals based on points or through cash purchases. The international flights include deals on both business class as well as economycl class

flights. The deals on the screen here are actually available at the time of making this video. [Music] Daily Drop Pro is also searchable by departure and arrival airports. So, say you need a great deal on a flight from Dallas to Sydney, Daily Drop Pro can help you with that. Click the link below for more

information. And full disclosure, if you do sign up using our link, we do get a small commission to help support the channel. Thank you very much for watching. Please like, share, subscribe, you know all those things. And remember, wherever you go, let wonder lead. Until we meet again.
