keep ook I'll be coming into view off your left side ebook I was also featured in The Descendants with George Clooney that's the land his family owned in that movie [Music] ah [Music]
[Laughter] the head of us is keeping ranch after working cattle ranch so you might spot some little brown cows running around down there in the first Jurassic Park movie this is where they came to the contact Spadina stores for the first time they drive their jeeps along Cathedral all the
Brachiosaurus has showed up that was right at this ranch and the mountain to your left poopoo ridge that was the backdrop in that scene they also made an appearance in Avatar but you probably wouldn't recognize them these are the floating mountains of Pandora they just the entire mountain range flip it upside
down with a computer and broke apart all the rocky section into the floating mount a little bit of movie magic on that one looking over the mountains you're looking down toward the southern shore line toward the town of Poipu boy who is one of our two major resort towns here on Kauai the other one being Fritz
going up off at North Shore we'll see that a little bit later on I saw their sorrel I've got some fabulous snorkeling with reefs off of Hawaii and poor poo beaches and this time of year the surfs breaking down that way as well so nice boogie board exhibition we're part of the Islander you guys all staying on all
right we'll see that a little bit later on that's my favorite part of the island I love the North Shore where you guys are visiting from I'm from Texas everybody else cool alright Texas California gravity was awesome local guys over my Texas folks you got old Gulf of Mexico pilot
drivin his bird mr. Tesla speed nice local guys yeah yeah a bit about myself I'm from South Florida civilian trained as a pilot about twelve years ago this is the second career for me and I am third generation pilot following at my grandmother's footsteps so far I've done most of my flying offshore in the Gulf
and I was on California's Central Coast out of Santa Maria flying the rigs came over this way about three years ago - so sightseeing for a living appreciate y'all done had a beautiful day on the island for you and now you're looking at the clouds ahead of us thinking I'm probably four beams on that one but it's
pretty much always cloudy the middle this island one of the rainiest places on earth it does not detract with the beauty in the leaf in fact that's what makes it so green a beautiful lights of the rainbow for us we're going to start working our way up into these hills clockwise around the island head on up
to the North Shore for a bit and we'll come back around towards the center of the island near the volcano before the day is done and this area up in the hills here this is one area where we are going to get some bumps and Wiggles we get the breeze that comes over the volcano nothing major this is our
private land ahead of us everything you see in front of you is going on for many many miles pass that is all owned by one sickle family they're the Robinson largest private land holders here on Kauai with over fifty one thousand acres and up about 15% of the island when the has quite a bit about the bond our
way around they are a very prominent family here on Kauai largely due to the amount of land that they own and the Robertsons may boast their money in sugarcane and cattle ranching and we will see some of the ranch land in little while a sugarcane I can't show you because no longer grown commercially
anywhere in Hawaii there was a largest crop for a long time but have gone away due to the increased cost of production these days our number one cash crop is coffee in Hawaii and Hawaii is actually home to the largest coffee plantation my coffee company down on the south shore off to your left alright shoreline
they're all those green fields down there and over 4 million trees and I'll proudly tell you they've counted every last one of them we will be staying up here in the hills from Malka as they say in one not a waterfall to show you the valley ahead I'm a pape a valley ahead of us the
Robinsons live right across the valley that our 11 o'clock will be dropping into their backyard for a minute nerado file we're going to go see is going to be tucked away download off our right hand side as we just sent down into the valley she stands 360 feet tall
it goes down a monomial puta these guys might be a little bit more familiar with us by physicians topic we'll have a look at your ass across
you ahead of us in the valley we'll make some turn throughout both sides you guys fear [Music]

and [Music] this is all private land here there's no way to see Jurassic Falls except by helicopter that is literally the
Robinsons backyard we were flying through they were talking about developing some of the land for tourism at one point but decided against it in Hawaii it's very strongly held value to maintain and preserve the land behind us and although the Robinsons aren't Hawaiian by blood they've been here for
over 150 years now definitely locals for all intensive purposes well that's something that's very near dear to their hearts as well [Music] the original descendants of the family to come over to Kauai was a Scottish woman Eliza Sinclair she was the ride of her life in New Zealand and it sailed
over this way back in 1863 a year later she made the first land purchase for the families it straight ahead of our horizon at the island of niihau the ousted seventeen miles southwest of Hawaii it's the remnants of the second volcano that grew up right next to why Ali Ali or the for this island he's
known as the Forbidden Island he's not allowed to set foot there unless you were born on the e house or invited by the Robinson that was a stipulation of the land deal whatta lies about the island that it never be developed or made public all this land of your left side that's all Robinson's cattle land
here Eliza brought the e half of the cake this is a long time ago way before Hawaii was a state that'd be about another 90 years at the time we were under the rule of King Kamehameha v and he charged the lives of ten thousand dollars of gold for that island naturally only equates to about 150
thousand dollars in today's money but now pocket change but pretty good rate for your private island is well an island [Music] having up on a beautiful little Canyon ahead of us this is a locale a canyon the robinsons Elvis too but they got this Riva cheaper than theme its entire
Canyon as far as you can see left to right was gifted into the family as a wedding noticing a bit of a change in the landscape and the slime business is a tiny bit of the isla booth travel we have seven climate zones reference warm little islet so you will see some fairly
dramatic changes on the way around we left on the east side and the east and north sides do tend to be the Rainier side so very very green and lush or you guys are staying at I'm sure you could tell that's all beautiful rainforest up there South Side around Poipu that's going to be the sunny side and we're
heading out now to the southwest very arid desert like a lot like the Southwest of the continental United States don't live and sunshine gonna watch my blues away we only get about six to ten inches of rainfall per year of this slide which is pretty neat because the center of the island is one
of the rainiest places higher world averaging over 450 inches per year so pretty dramatic difference per few miles away been a lot of them we're not the blue sky breeze and don't be [Music] world in the diet gonna reach my chair sunrise there's a bottom guy never been so happy never feel so high I think I
might've found me my own which is left Robinson land we're crossing over at the state land what you're looking at ahead of you is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific welcome to the white male Canyon [Music]
[Music] maybe look at the canyon walls you'll see all these horizontal lines with them what you're seeing are individual layers of lava separate eruptions and why on the island that's how the island was formed to be getting a little over five million years ago oldest of the Hawaiian
Islands so it's had the most time for erosion to sculpted and opinions an excellent example of that Waimea River is cutting down through the canyon that's running below us here and as it does it's exposing all those layers of lava to the air now lava comes from the center of the earth so it's
very very rich with iron when that iron comes into contact with our humid salty eyelid air and Bunga oxidize or rust after all the red dirt comes from here in Hawaiian dispatch arrests [Music]
to minister to Hawaiian volcanoes are called shield volcanoes meaning they don't explode dramatically upward making a big pointy Island but they just ooze out all these layers are seeing here making very dental hills like what you'll see on the big island Mauna Kea and Mauna LOA's and also Haleakala on
Maui and this island at one point was just one big sleuth amounts all this dramatic terrain you're seeing here this is the result of erosion following the extinction of the island area up in the upper end of the northern end of the
canyon is very popular for hiking my favorite hikes up this way is called the Canyon Trail it starts at the rim ahead of us takes you down to the top of the waterfall why proto Falls she dares 800 feet tall little more than double the height of Jurassic Falls [Music]
the colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky are the ones facing some people Pascal I mean how do we really see I love babies my Boston role feeling much
more we all know and to myself [Music] I Drive over to the canyon to do some hiking head to why man on the southwest side of the island about two to two and
a half hours for pretzel drive their Highway 550 is opinion it takes you all along this Western with beautiful scenic drive I'm out over the western rim may
be able to see that canyon road winding its way along and we'll come on bedico ka State Park I managed knock the road [Music] the body of water off to our right is
one of the many freshwater reservoirs we have here this is a beauty store up high it up in elevation at 3,500 feet that it's no longer tropical actually just found a finding here at night we breed rainbow trout there it'll survive in the tropics because they do pretty well up here your left-hand side all right now
the shoreline is a Navy base barking sands Pacific Missile Range just north of the base is poly Haleh State Beach that's as far as you could drive around the west side of the island under the road one of the unique features of Kauai compared to the other major one cannot circumnavigate this aisle as I wrote I
wrote only those three quarters the way around for the north to the west this whole northwest side up ahead of us is just way too rugged on the shoreline to build a road so that's where we're heading now [Music] we are [Music] after your front left has giant
ping-pong balls out there on the cliffs that's actually a radar facility that belongs to the Navy base even though look at out for the West for us this whole area up here is real popular hiking it's camping we have cabins for rent there's also hunting in the area we have wild page let's put the hunt for luaus
and we have mountain goats a black tail deer here but none of those animals are native the Hawaiian Islands are only indigenous mammals are the monk seal and Hawaiian fat everything else was brought over as livestock or just way too young from an evolutionary standpoint for many species to naturally evolve here working
our way on after that Northwest coastline now and again no way to get the right car there's no rose you can hike 11 mile rub it on foot that's known as the Kalalau trail very famous hike 22 mile round-trip but the rest is only accessible by helicopter or boat the sequence ahead of us these are the same
cliffs that is six days seven nights Harrison Ford and Anne Hayes jumped off our what a Pirates approached but in reality they're over 2,000 seats also that didn't actually happen as we cross over we want to keep a look off your right-hand side for your very first view of the world-famous
not Pali Coast [Music]
[Music] you couple beaches coming into view the first one you'll see there's a stone arch the crosses the sand out of the sea
at the corner crew Heroku is featured in Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger time at the Jack Sparrow ran right under that arch [Music]
next stretch of fans coming up is Colorado that's the end of the Kalalau trail the hike that goes all about the sequence ahead of us we're going to follow that to the Northeast it's just a few minutes after we're done playing around on this end [Music]
[Music] now hold up rubies more than I left now that's a very sacred beach that one you can't actually get to by boat it's forbidden I'll poo to land a watercraft of a sands of Hana poof not even a surfboard if you want to go there you have to swim somehow allow Beach right now it's about
a quarter-mile flip the bottom the water a little higher it's about a mile flip and the reason for that is this valley than Grimes above it this is the Valley of the Kings an ancient Hawaiian burial ground they used to bury their cheats the unleash even the walls of the valley and then hide the bowls is because
Hawaiians believe your bones contain your fauna your spirit they believe the ally has special powers so they didn't want that stolen or they would do is choose a warrior to bury the chief and it was high honor to be chosen and lowered down the valley walls by rope from high above and he
find a place even the fluted cliffs around us to bury the bone and I think of the rope and a warrior would fall to his death below that way to take with him forever the secret of where he buried the ball [Music] and [Music]

these are the Colorado cathedrals were crossing across now are we those famous the most photographed rock formations on Kauai and will cross over to colorado valley on the other side of the ridge line [Music]
this valley hundreds of years ago is home to two towers of quraían at the time it was our farmland they deforested the entire valley there are quite a few settlements along the Napali back in the days and everybody got around by ship this was on a popular trading route in the late 1800s it became a leper colony
this was back when leprosy was rampant the Hawaiian Islands they had quite a lot of folks to Boracay but there were some people that decided to remain right here in Colorado Valley and since it was so isolated the government allowed it for a while after that point it has been uninhabited and
it is now illegal to live along for the Pali this is all State Park but there are about three dozen hippies below us who do anyway actually the big hippie communes back in the 60s [Music] we're going to head out to the shoreline now and follow the Kalalau trail to the Northeast [Music]
National Geographic calls this trail one of the top 10 most beautiful on earth but it is also considered to be among the most dangerous there's a lot of it runs right off a Sea Cliff you'll be able to see it best off the red dirt hills ahead of us way down below our altitude winding along the cliff
[Music] we're get a few little bumps between here the end of the poly we have some winds coming over the balance ahead move out for us as we round the point we're
just coming up our most treacherous part of the trail or the crook gets a little rockier here at our two o'clock you'll see the trail zigzag a bit that part's known as crawlers ledge it's a mile long and an only eight inches wide [Music]
the mountains up ahead of us s Makana mouth these pointy Peaks silhouetted against the sky that mounted was made famous in the classic movie South Pacific ever since then it's been more popularly known as Bali Hai the bottom of Bali Hai the beach right on the point is Kas we're heading now ok is as far as
you could drive around for our side of the island into the road and it's the beginning of the Nepali we'll head up there now and make a turnaround give everybody a nice photo op of the whole Nepali before we continue [Music]
as we pull up alongside ka I'll put it on the right side first and we'll bring it around the left you'll notice there's a beautiful Lagoon tucked at the end of that Beach can't quite see it from here but as we climb up that will pop out pretty good it's an area surrounded by your leaf excellent snorkeling there a
lot of sea turtles this time of year that's my favorite spot on the island to catch a good sunset too [Music] see that Lagoon take shapes in arenas around in the turquoise area [Music]
now around the left side [Music]
okay a loggia left bag that's ordinary [Music] around now this whole area up ahead of us as Oliver North Shore it's all rainforest we're going to stay offshore just a couple more minutes then we'll headed limits you get a blue
[Music] River on the north side of the garden now this is the side of the island that's known for huge waves in the wintertime he's only about three to five footers at the outer surface right now in the middle of winter we get over 40 foot tall ways along with it's even higher than that close to 50 foot down
the road Kilauea the crescent-shaped reef ahead to your front right that's tunnels reefs have you seen the movie Soul Surfer or if you're familiar with Bethany Hamilton that's where she had a run-in with the tiger shark but that's very rare here she's so first there all the time this time of year makes a fabulous scuba
dive it got its name puddle sort of underwater a lot of tubes that went through the reef also great for snorkeling a lot of that reef comes up when it's a couple feet of the service backed up is a beautiful town of hi Anna to our right side pretty little North Shore town all the homes there are built
up on stilts to allow for storm search unfortunately they haven't had to use them since about the 1940s as last time it flooded above the beach level there the tall pine trees standing out of the town are known as Cook Pines they used to build ships masks out of those and they named them after Captain James Cook
he was the first European to ever land here in the Hawaiian Islands [Music] directly ahead of us up for you guys to stay in there crystal very well-known
for fabulous resorts gorgeous golf courses you can see the st. Regis resort right off a bluff straight ahead of us we're going to turn it here's the full crystal we'll put that on the left side on the land this long stretch of gold fans coming up on your front right that's lumahai Beach that was also a
major scene in South Pacific let me go mr. Gaynor wash that man right out of her hair and that lady no they got it all simple life and red sweet crystal blue eye there's this beautiful Hanalei Bay guys remember the song pops
the magic dragon he lived in a land called honah Lee I was Hanalei Bay they wrote of the road favorites off of the aisle to hang out the beach up here at the North Shore when I was young [Music]
now I know rectangular farm fields you see down below so there Carol fields taro is a root vegetable very similar to a potato although it's purple farm kind
of like right flooded patty the Hawaiians make POI out of very traditional food here kind of looks like purple mashed potatoes you guys had a chance to go to a luau yet try some fine wine if you get a chance blue eyes are lots of fun I can't promise you of the POI a little different from the food you
guys get in Texas but the luaus are a blast you guys want to try what we know I'd be happy to recommend [Music] we're going to head on into the interior of the island now see all this beautiful rainforest up close go find some
waterfalls to have a look at now this is the Rainier side of the island here very common to get these passing showers come through what keeps it so beautiful and green and lush up this way and in Hawaii we consider that to be a blessing so again rain down you always get blessed Hawaiian style

I'm a waterfall coming down the hill coming up on our right side what is in a bit she only flows we've had a lot of rain recently up in the upper elevation and because she doesn't always grow she will not be seen if you want to probably hear referred to by name and so my feeling always flows
and one of those coming around the corner for you [Music]

[Music] because we have so many intermittent waterfalls on the island the turnoff iran and also because new ones pop up day by day as landslides carved through the earth and erosion continues there is no one number regarding how many waterfalls exist on the island but it is as a multiple mountain

Valley is an excellent representation of what most of the interior of the island looks like great for snow rose water falls for days all of us now both sides of this valley 70% of this island isn't accessible by any other means in helicopter [Music]
I am [Music] lighter color trees down below the
valley to stand out a bit from the others those are Kukui trees that's where we get the Kukui nut from that's woven into lays looks a lot like a Buckeye if you're familiar with that also known as the candle nut you can light it and stay for about 20 minutes so the ancient hawaiians would harvest

so instead since they replenish so quickly those be some fair spots up ahead where we're cutting them down we use them as a biomass energy source now big part of the electric grid here on Kauai we're about 2100 miles away from the mainland so that's our oil has to be voted to get here the alternative energy

we make a turn here then we'll turn around put it off the right there she is coming into view off your left-hand sides after wailua falls she stands 173 feet tall and that is the waterfall to the old TV show Fantasy Island now that way you can actually drive to it's about
15 minutes from the airport as a lihue to get up there you can see the parking lot off to the left side if you want to get a closer look Alvers around the right side [Music] now don't know though I don't know I'm
