What to Expect from a Grand Canyon West Helicopter Tour

This video documents the aerial experience of flying out from the bottom of the helicopter tour at Grand Canyon West, one of the most dramatic approaches to leaving the canyon. Shot about five years ago on an early smartphone, the footage shows the actual ascent and departure sequence that passengers experience after spending time on the canyon floor. The tour originates near Las Vegas and takes visitors down to the Colorado River level—among the deepest accessible points in the Grand Canyon—before the return flight shown here.

This expedition works best for travelers seeking an unforgettable aerial perspective combined with ground-level canyon exploration. Whether you're a first-time Grand Canyon visitor or an experienced adventure traveler, the combination of helicopter flight and canyon views appeals to those who want more than a scenic drive or rim-based tour. Book early—spots fill quickly, especially during peak travel seasons.

Important Details Before You Book

  • Three operator options: Papillon and Sundance run identical tours with a 15-minute pontoon boat ride on the Colorado River at the bottom; Maverick offers a different experience with a landing site where you can walk around on the canyon floor instead of the boat ride
  • Flight path: All helicopters follow the same regulated flight route from Grand Canyon West, so the aerial views are consistent across operators
  • Loading procedures: Papillon and Sundance use hot loading and hot unloading, meaning propellers keep running; Maverick stops propellers as standard policy
  • Ground time variation: The pontoon boat option gives you time floating on the river at the canyon's narrowest point; the Maverick landing option provides time to explore on foot at their dedicated canyon-floor site
  • Video quality note: Older smartphone footage may look different from what modern cameras capture, but it accurately represents the actual sights and experience
  • Best booking approach: Reserve as early as possible, as tour spots at Grand Canyon West fill quickly during tourist season

Frequently Asked Questions About Grand Canyon West Helicopter Tours

Which helicopter company should I choose?

The video explains that Papillon and Sundance offer the same tour structure—helicopter down, pontoon boat ride on the Colorado River, and helicopter back up. Maverick differs by skipping the boat ride and instead offering a landing site on the canyon floor where you can walk around. Your choice depends on whether you prefer a water experience or more ground exploration time. All three operators fly the same regulated route, so aerial views are equivalent.

How deep into the Grand Canyon does the helicopter go?

The video confirms that Grand Canyon West helicopter tours reach the bottom of the canyon—among the deepest accessible points. You'll see 3,000 feet of sheer cliff walls looking up from the canyon floor, and if you take the Papillon or Sundance pontoon boat, you'll float through the narrowest section of the canyon on the Colorado River.

What is the pontoon boat ride like?

The pontoon boat portion lasts approximately 15 minutes and travels down the Colorado River at the narrowest part of the canyon. The video shows you're surrounded by towering cliff walls while floating on the river, making it one of the most immersive parts of the tour. This element is included with Papillon and Sundance but not with Maverick.

Do I need to worry about the helicopter safety during landing and takeoff?

The video notes that Papillon and Sundance perform hot loading and hot unloading, meaning the propellers continue running throughout. Maverick operates differently, stopping the propellers during loading and unloading. Both methods are standard industry practice. The video shows the actual landing sequence so you can see what to expect when you arrive and depart.

When is the best time to book this tour?

Based on the video's context, book as early as possible before your trip. Grand Canyon West helicopter tours fill quickly, especially during peak seasons (spring and fall), so securing your spot weeks in advance ensures availability. Early booking also often provides better rate options.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful because it cuts through marketing speak and shows you exactly what the departure sequence looks like—the actual perspective you'll have from inside the helicopter as you leave the canyon, plus a clear comparison of what each operator does differently. The footage confirms that this is a legitimate deep-canyon experience, not just a quick scenic loop.

What stands out most is how the video explains the operator differences upfront, so you're not surprised when you arrive. Seeing the real ascent and landing process removes the mystery and makes booking a specific operator feel informed rather than guesswork. This is absolutely worth watching before committing to any Grand Canyon West helicopter tour.

Description

So what's it like to be on a helicopter coming out of the Grand Canyon West? Here is a sample from an old video clip I made about four years ago with one of my first smartphones.
Papillon/Grand Canyon Helicopters and Sundance do the same tour with 15-minute pontoon boat ride at the bottom of the Canyon. Maverick does not do the pontoon boat. They have their own landing spot at the bottom and gives time to walk around on the floor of the canyon.
