Overview of the Three Bays Helicopter Flight Around Cape Town

The Three Bays helicopter ride takes you on an aerial tour of Cape Town and its surrounding coastline, departing from the city and circling back past some of South Africa's most iconic landmarks. In the video, a couple completes this scenic flight as the final experience of a two-week South African holiday, combining it with a ground visit to Table Mountain via cable car to experience the region from multiple perspectives. The flight offers unobstructed aerial views of the city, the mountain, and the bays that give the tour its name—all set to the soundtrack of traditional marimba music recorded on Cape Town's waterfront.

This experience suits travelers who want a premium, elevated view of Cape Town without committing to a full-day adventure. It works well as a standalone outing or as the capstone to a longer South African trip. If you've already explored the city at ground level and want to see how it all connects from above, or if you're short on time but want maximum scenic impact, a helicopter tour delivers that perspective in a compact timeframe.

What to Know Before Booking Your Three Bays Helicopter Ride

  • Tour timing: The flight is typically offered as a distinct tour slot; plan it as a separate booking from other Cape Town activities
  • Best combined with ground exploration: The video shows this helicopter tour works especially well after visiting Table Mountain by cable car, as it gives context to what you've already seen
  • Tour operator: Book through established helicopter tour companies operating in Cape Town; this particular flight departs from the city and requires advance reservation
  • Part of a broader itinerary: If you're visiting South Africa, consider this as one experience within a longer holiday—the travelers in the video paired it with Kruger Game Reserve and other locations
  • Photography opportunity: Bring a camera capable of shooting through helicopter windows; the aerial views are the main draw

Questions About the Three Bays Helicopter Experience

How long is the Three Bays helicopter tour?

The video doesn't specify an exact duration, but it presents enough content to suggest a flight lasting somewhere in the 20–40 minute range typical of regional aerial tours. You should confirm the exact flight time when booking, as this affects scheduling around other Cape Town activities.

What's included in the helicopter tour?

The flight itself includes the aerial route over Cape Town's bays and landmarks. Safety briefing and standard helicopter tour amenities (headsets for communication, seating, etc.) are typically included, though specifics depend on the operator. The video doesn't detail catering or other add-ons.

Is this tour suitable for people who are afraid of heights?

Helicopter tours do involve flying at altitude with unobstructed views. If heights concern you significantly, this may not be the best choice. The video doesn't address anxiety management or alternative options, so discuss any concerns with the operator when booking.

Can you do this tour if you're visiting Cape Town for just a few days?

Yes. The Three Bays flight works as a standalone tour and doesn't require a multi-week itinerary. The couple in the video fit it into the final leg of a longer holiday, but a helicopter tour can be booked independently for a shorter visit.

What's the best time of year to book this flight?

The video was filmed in early October (spring in the Southern Hemisphere), which is typically a pleasant season in Cape Town. However, weather conditions and wind can affect helicopter operations year-round. Check with the operator about seasonal variations and book during clear-weather windows.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful for anyone considering a helicopter tour in Cape Town. It doesn't oversell the experience or use heavy editing tricks—instead, it shows the actual aerial views you'll get, set to authentic local music, which gives you a realistic sense of what the flight delivers. You see exactly what the route covers and how the landscape looks from above, which is what matters most when deciding to book.

What I appreciated most was how the video integrates the helicopter tour into a broader travel story rather than treating it as an isolated bucket-list item. By showing it as the final experience of a South African holiday, and pairing it with Table Mountain ground-level access, it frames the flight as something that makes sense within a real trip. If you're planning a Cape Town visit and want to see what an aerial tour actually shows you, this is worth watching before you commit. I'd definitely recommend it.

Description

My wife and I recently enjoyed a two week holiday inn South Africa, courtesy of RIVIERA TRAVEL. During the final leg of the holiday we took a helicopter ride - The Three Bays Ride, to see Cape Town and the surrounding area from the air. This video is a record of that trip. The music used was recorded by The Abikondela Marimba Band (Facebook.com/Abikondela Marimba Band) who I saw performing on the waterfront at Cape Town.
