Overview of This Tokyo Island Helicopter Service
This video captures a real scenic flight between two remote Japanese islands—a 20-minute helicopter tour connecting Hachijojima and Aogashima, part of Tokyo's surprisingly extensive public transportation network. The footage shows the departure from Aogashima, an active volcanic island south of the Japanese mainland, where the videographer spent a week before returning by air. Rather than a tourist spectacle, this is a working transport service that locals and visitors alike use to navigate between islands when weather permits.
This experience suits travelers seeking authentic, off-the-beaten-path adventure in Japan—people drawn to remote islands, willing to book ahead, and interested in seeing a less-commercialized side of Tokyo's geography. If you're the type to prefer genuine island life over resort tourism, and you're curious about how Japan's outer islands connect to the mainland, this helicopter service offers both practical transport and memorable aerial views.
What You'll See on the Aogashima Helicopter Flight

Frequently Asked Questions About Flying Between Tokyo's Outer Islands
Is this a tourist helicopter tour or actual transportation?
This is a genuine public transportation service operated by a local air company. While it's absolutely scenic, it functions primarily as a practical link between islands when weather allows, not as a dedicated sightseeing flight.
What happens if weather cancels my flight?
The helicopter service is weather-dependent, just like the ferry it supplements. If conditions are unsafe, your flight will be postponed or canceled. The ferry option exists as an alternative, though it also cancels in poor conditions and has limited scheduling.
Can I bring luggage, and how much does excess baggage cost?
You get 5 kg of free baggage allowance. Beyond that, each additional kilogram costs ¥250, so pack thoughtfully if you're staying on the island for a week or longer.
How far in advance do I need to book?
Reservations open one month ahead of your desired travel date. Since availability is limited, especially during peak seasons, booking as soon as the window opens is essential.
What's the best time of day to fly?
The video doesn't specify ideal time of day for flying, but morning flights often offer clearer visibility and calmer conditions on oceanic routes. Check with the operator about seasonal weather patterns.
