Overview of This Queenstown Mountain and Jet Adventure
This video captures a full-day adventure in Queenstown, New Zealand, centred around three distinct experiences: a helicopter tour to Coronet Peak that culminates in a mountain snow landing, scenic observation of aircraft arrivals at Queenstown Airport, and a thrilling jet boat ride on the Shotover River. The video shows what it's genuinely like to step out of a helicopter onto alpine terrain and explore snow-covered peaks, then transitions to quieter vantage points before ending with high-speed water action.
This experience suits anyone who enjoys a mix of aerial views, mountain scenery, and adrenaline activities without committing to a single long tour. It's ideal for travellers with a full day to spend, those comfortable with small-aircraft flying, and visitors keen to see both the alpine and river landscapes that make Queenstown a hub for adventure tourism.
Key Moments and Highlights
- Helicopter ascent to Coronet Peak with views building as elevation increases
- Landing on mountain snow and exiting the aircraft to explore the alpine summit area
- Watching commercial jet arrivals (Jetstar and Air New Zealand flights) from a mountain vantage point near Lake Wanaka
- Ride on the Shotover Jet, navigating the river's narrow channels at speed
- Multiple perspectives of Queenstown region scenery from air, ground, and water

What to Know Before Booking
- The helicopter component includes a landing on snow, so weather conditions on the day will affect feasibility; Coronet Peak's altitude and exposure mean unpredictable conditions are normal
- Thermal layers and weatherproof outerwear are essential for the mountain phase, even in warmer seasons
- The full itinerary spans multiple locations (helicopter base, Coronet Peak, Lake Wanaka, Shotover River), requiring travel between sites
- Booking is done through The Helicopter Line for the aerial portion and Shotover Jet separately for the river activity
- Early or mid-morning time of day typically offers clearer mountain visibility and calmer river conditions
- Bring a camera or phone with secure mounting if you want to capture footage; stabilization helps during helicopter flight and jet boat activity
Frequently Asked Questions About This Queenstown Adventure
Is the helicopter landing on snow safe for first-time fliers?
Yes. The Helicopter Line operates these flights regularly, and landing on packed alpine snow is a routine part of their service. Pilots are trained for mountain conditions, and the aircraft is designed for high-altitude operations. You will be given a safety briefing before boarding.
How long does the full experience take?
The video shows activities spread across a full day, with separate time blocks for the helicopter flight to Coronet Peak, the drive to Lake Wanaka for plane-spotting, and the Shotover Jet ride. Plan for 6–8 hours total if combining all three activities with travel time between locations.
What should I wear for the mountain portion?
Dress in layers even if it's warm in Queenstown town; temperatures drop significantly with altitude. Bring a windproof jacket, warm mid-layer, sturdy closed-toe boots or hiking shoes with good grip for snow, and a hat or beanie. Gloves are helpful, and sunglasses protect against alpine glare reflecting off snow.
Can I do just the helicopter or just the jet boat separately?
Yes. The Helicopter Line and Shotover Jet operate as independent businesses, so you can book either one alone or combine them as the video does. This flexibility lets you tailor the day to your budget and comfort level.
What if weather prevents the helicopter landing?
Mountain weather can change rapidly. Operators typically offer rebooking for another day or alternative routes if a snow landing isn't possible. Confirm your operator's weather policy when booking so you know your options if conditions don't allow the planned activity.
