Overview of the Pilot's Choice Glacier Helicopter Tour from Juneau

This helicopter tour departs from Juneau, Alaska, as a shore excursion for cruise passengers aboard Celebrity Eclipse. Operated by Temsco, the "Pilot's Choice" tour takes visitors on an aerial journey to explore glaciers in the Juneau area, with the flexibility that comes from having an experienced pilot decide the specific route and landing sites based on current conditions. The video documents the experience in May 2019, showing both the flight itself and time spent on the ground near the glaciers.

This experience suits travelers who want to see Alaska's glaciers from above and up close, without committing to a multi-day backcountry expedition. If you're cruising through Southeast Alaska and want a memorable, high-impact half-day activity, or if you're simply visiting Juneau and looking for an unforgettable way to experience the region's natural landscape, this type of tour delivers. It's particularly appealing to those who don't mind flying in a helicopter and want views that are difficult to access any other way.

What You'll See on This Glacier Aerial Experience

  • Two separate glaciers visited during a single flight, with the specific locations chosen by the pilot based on weather and flying conditions
  • Aerial views of Juneau and the surrounding landscape from the helicopter itself
  • Close-up views and ground time at glacier sites, allowing you to walk on or near the ice and experience the landscape at eye level
  • The dramatic contrast between the helicopter's vantage point high above and the intimate perspective you gain when standing near the glaciers
  • Changing weather and light conditions throughout the day—the video shows that even with a forecast predicting rain, clear skies and excellent visibility are possible

What to Know Before Booking Your Juneau Glacier Helicopter Tour

  • The tour is available as a cruise shore excursion through Celebrity Cruises, though it may also be bookable independently through Temsco or other local operators
  • Tours operate year-round, though the video was filmed in May, which is late spring in Southeast Alaska and generally a good time of day for clear views
  • Weather conditions can change rapidly; the video documents a day when rain was forecast but excellent weather materialized, so flexibility and optimism are worthwhile
  • The tour includes both helicopter flight time and walking time on the ground near glaciers, so you should be prepared for variable terrain and cold temperatures
  • This is a smaller-group, specialized activity rather than a mass-market tour, meaning more personalized service but also limited availability—book early if cruising
  • The "Pilot's Choice" designation means your specific glaciers and landing sites are not guaranteed in advance; the pilot customizes the route for safety and optimal viewing

Frequently Asked Questions About This Alaska Helicopter Tour

How long does the entire tour last?

The video does not specify an exact duration, but typical glacier helicopter tours in Southeast Alaska run between three and five hours from pickup to return, including flight time, ground time at glacier sites, and transfer to and from the helicopter base. Check with your cruise line or the operator for precise timing.

What should I wear for a glacier helicopter tour in Juneau?

Dress in layers and bring a waterproof jacket, even if the forecast looks clear—mountain weather in Alaska changes fast. Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots suitable for walking on uneven terrain and potentially wet ice. Gloves and a warm hat are essential, as temperatures near glaciers are significantly colder than in town.

Is this tour safe for first-time helicopter flyers?

The video shows a professional, well-operated tour with an experienced pilot, and the tour operates as a licensed shore excursion for major cruise lines, indicating strong safety standards. If you have concerns about helicopter flight, discuss them with the operator beforehand, but thousands of passengers take similar tours annually without incident.

Can I book this tour independently, or only through a cruise?

The video shows it available as a Celebrity Cruises excursion, but Temsco (the operator) also runs tours for the general public in Juneau. If you're visiting Juneau without cruising, contact local tour operators directly to arrange a similar glacier helicopter flight.

What camera equipment should I bring?

The video was filmed with quality photography and video equipment, suggesting that modern cameras or smartphones will capture good images. Bring a camera you're comfortable using, but be aware that helicopter windows can cause reflections—a polarizing filter or lens cloth can help. Consider bringing extra batteries, as cold temperatures drain them faster.

Why was this tour highlighted as the cruise's best activity?

The video notes it was "the highlight of the entire cruise" due to the incredible views, the combination of aerial and ground perspectives, and the excellent conditions despite poor weather forecasts. Glacier tours offer a uniqueness and sense of adventure that typical port-day activities don't provide.

Justin’s Take

This video is genuinely helpful if you're deciding whether a glacier helicopter tour is right for you. It doesn't oversell the experience or hide the logistics; instead, it shows real footage from the air and on the ground, letting you see exactly what you'd be paying for. The honest detail about poor weather forecasts that didn't materialize is especially valuable—it sets realistic expectations about Alaska's unpredictability.

What stands out most is the sequence of aerial views combined with the close-up glacier moments, which gives a complete picture of what the experience actually feels like. If you're cruise-bound to Juneau or visiting Southeast Alaska, this is exactly the kind of adventure worth prioritizing, and this video makes a strong, believable case for it.
