Budget Van Life Essentials Under $30: What Brian Recommends
Host Brian walks through 10 practical items you can buy for under $30 each to improve daily van life comfort and functionality, filmed beside his campervan known as the War Wagon. The video is shot in a straightforward, no-nonsense style—Brian holds up each item, explains its real-world uses, and shares approximate prices he paid. This isn't aspirational gear talk; it's gear that solves actual problems van dwellers face daily, from shower privacy to keeping a tidy living space.
If you're building out your first van, upgrading an existing setup on a tight budget, or simply want to know what experienced van lifers actually use and rely on, this video cuts through the noise. Brian focuses on items that earn their place through repeated use rather than novelty, making it relevant whether you're boondocking solo or managing a shared space.
Key Moments
Essential Gear Covered in This Van Life Shopping Guide
Blue tarps (6×9) from tractor supply stores—multipurpose tools for privacy barriers, shower enclosures, and weather protection, typically around $5
Camp rugs (approximately 6×9 feet) to define living areas and reduce dust and cold from van floors
Pourover coffee makers for under $10—simple, reliable hot beverage brewing without electricity
USB-rechargeable clip-on fans in multiple styles, including evaporative coolers and models with LED lights, ranging from $11 to under $20
Handheld rechargeable vacuum cleaners with attachments for $24.99—essential for managing the dust that accumulates in van living
USB-rechargeable LED lights with color-changing and remote-control features, three-pack with charger under $20
What You Need to Know Before Buying These Van Life Items
Blue tarps are often available at tractor supply stores and previously came free with coupons; current pricing is typically around $5 for the standard 6×9 size
Most items mentioned are available on Amazon, with open-box and discounted options sometimes offering additional savings
The handheld vacuum is particularly useful if you keep van windows open frequently, as dust accumulation increases significantly
USB-rechargeable items require power sources (solar, hookups, or vehicle charging) to recharge, which Brian assumes van dwellers already manage
Camp showers and baking tins are highlighted for their surprising versatility—uses extend beyond their primary function (showering/baking)
Two bonus items mentioned at the end cost more than $30 but Brian considers them essential; he briefly references his pickup truck and emphasizes the War Wagon as the most significant purchase he's made
Common Questions About Affordable Van Life Gear
Where can I actually find these items for under $30?
Brian sources most items from Amazon (including open-box deals), tractor supply stores, and the dollar store. Prices vary, but he consistently found everything mentioned within the $30 budget, with many items closer to $5–$20.
Is a handheld vacuum really necessary in a van?
Yes, according to Brian—van life is inherently dusty, especially if you keep windows open. A compact, rechargeable handheld vacuum with attachments helps maintain tidiness and comfort without requiring permanent installation or external power.
What makes a blue tarp so essential?
Blue tarps have multiple uses: shower privacy barriers, weather protection, ground covers, and outdoor work surfaces. Brian emphasizes there are "so many uses" he doesn't even try to list them all, making it one of the most versatile purchases on the list.
Can I charge USB-rechargeable items while traveling?
The video assumes you already have a charging solution in your van (solar panels, 12V power, vehicle charging ports, or hookups at campsites). Brian doesn't address charging infrastructure, so you'll need to verify compatibility with your existing power setup.
Are these items enough to set up a basic van?
These 10 items address comfort, cleaning, lighting, and hygiene but represent just the budget essentials. Brian includes two bonus items at the end (a pickup truck and the War Wagon itself) that he considers truly crucial, suggesting these 10 are supplements to larger infrastructure already in place.
This video delivers genuine value for budget-conscious van lifers. Brian doesn't oversell anything; he shows real items he actually uses, shares honest prices, and explains practical applications rather than just listing gear. The straightforward format and focus on sub-$30 items make it immediately actionable for someone outfitting their first van or adding essentials on a limited budget.
What works best is the mix of obvious necessities (vacuum, dustpan) and items that surprise viewers with their versatility (blue tarp, baking tin). The bonus commentary about his pickup truck and War Wagon adds personality without derailing the core message. If you're serious about van life on a budget, this is well worth watching.
